" Wasn't that in a school way upstate NY...Lake Champlain area not that far from the Quebec border?"

That I don't remember. I kind of thought it was more out west, but I am not sure.

CORINTH -- Village police went to Corinth High School Tuesday afternoon after the phrase 'Hell is coming 3-13-04' was found written on the wall of a boy's restroom.

The vague threat might have been a misguided student's attempt to copycat or respond to a shooting incident Monday at Columbia High School in East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, school Superintendent Matthew Breitenbach said.

'I think that is a possibility,' he said. 'Although, from time to time, it happens without anything in the news.'

Columbia High School junior Jon Romano, 16, is charged with attempted murder in Monday's shooting. Special education teacher Michael Bennet was shot in the leg and treated and released from Albany Medical Center.

'Our hearts go out to Columbia High School,' Breitenbach said. 'It's getting close to home.'

Corinth Police Chief Robert Kane said his officers swept Corinth High School and found nothing out of the ordinary.

'We will have officers at the high school (today),' he said. 'We'll have officers at the high school March 13 as a precaution.'

March 13, however, is a Saturday.

Chief Kane said he relied Tuesday on an emergency plan developed and refined in the wake of the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado.

'Columbine was a wake-up call to a lot of us,' Kane said. 'We consider the safety at the school our highest priority.'

Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III said each of Saratoga County's 13 schools has a detailed emergency plan, the result of series of meetings he and Sheriff James D. Bowen had with school officials in the wake of Columbine. Police agencies have copies of the plan and blueprints of the school, as does Murphy, who also keeps contact information for all school superintendents with the safety plans.

'I keep that in a very easily accessible place should I need it, in the middle of the night or whenever,' he said.

Murphy schools practice the plans and that BOCES has even had experts witness drills at its Saratoga Springs facility.

Saratoga Springs Police Chief Edward Moore said Tuesday that police are familiar with the emergency plans at the schools. Moore said he couldn't go into details regarding the plan.

Corinth's Chief Kane said the emergency plans for Corinth schools contain evacuation procedures for the 1,300 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The plan also has provisions for hostage situations, unwanted visitors who become combative and bomb threats. Kane said he also has plans to set up a police command post at the school if the situation calls for one.
