Loftus said it was unclear, but Egypt just seemed to pop up here and say "oh yeah, we have Zawahri's brother". did they announce this three years ago when they caught him? or at any time before now? was there a thread for that FT article you posted?

Loftus was quite excited tonight, saying that "stuff was happening". But he won't be back on until Monday, unless he does the Eric Shawn FNC Sunday morning show.

I wish I was able to hear Loftus' reports. I do appreciate your updates on what he has to say.

I'm not sure if there was a thread on the brother.

Brother of al-Zawahri to be retried in Egypt

AFP[ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2004 09:30:23 PM ]

CAIRO : A brother of Al-Qaeda terror network number two, Ayman al-Zawahri,
already sentenced to death in absentia by an Egyptian court, will be retried
here, a court official said Saturday.

Mohammed al-Zawahri, a member of the Islamist Al-Jihad movement led by his
brother Ayman, was extradited to Egypt by an Arab country in 2001 and is
currently being held in an Egyptian prison, the official said.

Mohammed al-Zawahri, head of Jihad's military wing, was sentenced to die in
1999 in a trial of 107 people accused of "belonging to Jihad and working to
overthrow the regime" of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the source said.

The official was unable to say when the new trial would begin.

Under Egyptian law, a person sentenced in absentia must be retried upon his
return to Egypt .
