DALLAS (Reuters) - A vegetarian group wants an Oklahoma town named after a family that helped settle the state to change its name to Veggieville because they think its sounds a lot better than Slaughterville. The city council of Slaughterville, Oklahoma, a town of about 3,000 in the center of the state, was due to discuss next week the proposal by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA is even offering $20,000 worth of veggie burgers to an area school if the name change goes through.

But town manager Marsha Blair said on Friday the chances of passage were slim to none. "We do not intend to change the name," she told Reuters.

Bruce Friedrich, PETA's campaign manager, said the organization is focusing its resources on the abuse and cruelty of animals that are killed for the food and clothing industries in slaughterhouses.

"Even if the people of Slaughterville are not looking at the cruelty to farmed animals as an issue, it is a fact that anyone, including the residents of Slaughterville, who is eating meat, is supporting the felony level of abuse of animals," he said.

Slaughterville was named after a family that helped settle the area in the 19th century. The family ran a dry goods store and blacksmith shop.

"$20,000 worth of veggie burgers to an area school if the name change goes through."

What???? If they change the name, why would you punish them by giving them veggie burgers?

E"ven if the people of Slaughterville are not looking at the cruelty to farmed animals as an issue, it is a fact that anyone, including the residents of Slaughterville, who is eating meat, is supporting the felony level of abuse of animals," he said."

I second that. Imbeciles!

Simply more evidence that substandard meat intake leads to insanity.

These people need a nice mid-summer meat-wave.

There at it again, a couple of years ago, IIRC, PETA tried to change a name of a town in NY. I believe the name of the town was Fishkill.

The only place on Earth where you'd be likely to find people with sufficiently little self respect to take that $20,000 would be France.

They should set their sights on Kent County, Delaware, where we have a "Slaughter Beach."

For $20,000? Yes! $20,000 worth of veggies masquerading as food? Even the French have more pride than that.

Does this also apply to anyone with the surname, Slaughter?

A little insightful trivia for the morons at PETA...

The English surname Slaughter can be derived from several sources. Firstly, it can be local in origin, deriving from the name of the locality where a bearer once lived. In this case, the surname can be traded to the town of Slaughter in Gloucester. During the Middle Ages natives frequently adopted their family names from their town of origin, as there was no structured system of hereditary surnames in existence. This surname can also derive form the Old English word “slohtre,” meaning “a muddy place.” Hence the surname would come to denote a dweller near a muddy place.

Vegatables feel pain too, how many innocent veggies have to die for your horrible PETA agenda? As for the fur coats, don't the airheads at PETA know that fake fur comes from stuffed bunnies. PETA is depriving innocent children of playtoys just so their insane supporters can wear 'fake fur' coats.

What do the People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables have to say about this?

In two related stories, PETA has also put out a notice inquiring as to the whereabouts of their latest emissary to Slaughterville, Oklahoma.

And the Slaughterville Grange has announced it's first Long Pig Barbeque has been set for next Saturday at 1 PM. . .

This is cattle country. Beef is what's for dinner. I live down the road from this community, and I don't know anyone who'd willingly eat a veggieburger. (Plus, one little flaw in their plan--there is no school in Slaughterville.)

Really. This song says it all:

Carrot Juice Is Murder
(Music and Lyrics by The Arrogant Worms)
http://www.folkweb.com/arrogantworms/#livebait

Listen up brothers and sisters. Come hear my desperate tale.
I speak of our friends of nature trapped in the dirt like a jail.
Vegetables live in oppression served on our tables each night.
This killing of veggies is madness. I say we take up the fight.
Salads are only for murderers. Coleslaw's a fascist regime.
Don't think that they don't have feelings just cuz a radish can't scream.

Chorus:
I've heard the screams of the vegetables, (Scream, scream, scream.)
Watching their skins being peeled. (Having their insides revealed.)
Grated and steamed with no mercy. (Burning off calories.)
How do you think that feels? (Bet it hurts really bad.)
Carrot juice constitutes murder. (And that's a real crime.)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves. (Let my vegetables grow.)
It's time to stop all this gardening. (It's dirty as hell.)
Let's call a spade a spade. (Is a spade, is a spade, is a spade.)

I saw a man eating celery so I beat him black and blue.
If he ever touches a sprout again, I'll bite him clean in two.
I'm political prisoner trapped in a windowless cage,
Cause I stopped the slaughter of turnips by killing five men in a rage.
I told the judge when he sentenced me, "This is my finest hour
I'd kill those farmers again just to save one more cauliflower."

Chorus:
I've heard the screams of the vegetables, (Scream, scream, scream.)
Watching their skins being peeled. (Having their insides revealed.)
Grated and steamed with no mercy. (Burning off calories)

How low as people do we dare to stoop
Making young broccolis bleed in the soup.
Untie your beans, uncage your tomatoes, Let potted plants free.
Don't mash that potato, Oh, spare the spider, Eat up calories, Oh!

Chorus:
I've heard the screams of the vegetables, (Scream, scream, scream)
Watching their skins being peeled. (Fates in the stir fry are sealed.)
Grated and steamed with no mercy. (You fat gourmet scum.)
How do you think that feels? (Leave them out in the fields.)
Carrot juice constitutes murder. (V8's genocide.)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves. (Yes your compost's a grave.)
It's time to stop all this gardening. (Take up macramé.)
Let's call a spade a spade. (Is a spade, is a spade, is a spade.)

Power to the peas.
Give peas a chance.
All we are saying is "Give peas a chance".

Veggie burgers aren't too bad if you fry them in bacon fat.
