Actually, the correct definition of a Hispanic is a (European) Spaniard, or a descendant of. Which would make Hispanics at least as European as I am. It is a confusing world, Guillermo.

Well, technically yes. But, the term "Hispanic" has been hijacked to include every mestizo and other Spanish-speakers on earth.

Yes and it's very important in the minds of some that they not be associated with mestizos and other such 'undesirables'.

You might want to wave the Banneker (sp?) scholarship in their face. That one is sure offensive to me.
Be prepared to be opposed by the PTB. 'Pubbies are supposed to play "nice."

Could it be that the next generation of Republicans were born with a spine? Don't get your hopes up. The current establishment will run the other direction from these kids so fast, you'll think it's a gang of Democrats headed for a government check.
And they will work overtime to make sure that none of these young activists get any post of authority or run for public office under the Republican name. Because the one thing they are TERRIFIED of is being labeled "racist". God Forbid.
Did you see Bush criticize the judicial tyranny that came out of the SCOTUS last summer on "Affirmative Action"? No. Nothing. A polite, "well, we think they did the right thing". So now racial and ethnic quotas are now mandatory because of a "compelling state interest" in "diversity", not a temporary program to redress past wrongs.
This will be repudiated by the hierarchy, who will fall all over themselves apologizing.

>(Though I've never really understood why hispanic isn't white).
Hispanics can be white, black, Indian or any combination of the above, although activists are saying you aren't really hispanic unless you have some indio in you and you have a leftist political slant much like the whining mexicans.
To: sauropod
It doesn't make sense to me how he can enjoy the benefits of an ethnic scholarship but turn around and say they're wrong.

It seems that President Nirschel and his wife are the driving power behind the move to provide scholarships to Afghan woman. Would someone ask them what's the matter with Afghan men?

Well, it's intellectually lazy, but there is a certain motive behind it.
Hispanic is as much a race as Basque, Neapolitan, or Swiss. It's an attempt to lump diverse ethnicities into one "group," a typical tactic of the left.
You'd be surprised at how many people think Cubans, or Spaniards are "black."
"Wow, you're light skinned for a Cuban, aren't you!?"

Heh... I know A LOT of Spaniards who would die from insult if someone ever thought they were black. The only people who have an interest/agenda in keeping racial classifications alive are the left liberal groups. I do notice a lot of intellectual laziness coming from the left BTW.

Then again it was world war three when Jennifer Lopez was cast as Selena... so who knows? The left has no real respect for any culture anyway.

Even many Mexicans are "white" (Hispanic).
Most, of course, are Mestizo.
Race is a social construct, ethnicity is not.

"You should let the college republicans know that scholarships and AA are not related."
Oh, they most certainly ARE related. At every university that I know of, special scholarships are set aside for non-whites and non-whites only.
"Affirmative action has to do with admissions policy set by the administration of each university."
This is true. And most blacks and hispanics that apply to universities would not be considered for admission (at least to our elite universities) but for the color of their skin. Admission should be strictly by merit only, period. Anything else is racism, pure and simple.
"The largest group that benefits from these policy's are females (and most of those are white)."
Another famous fallacy of the pro-racist discrimination (also known as "affirmative action") proponents. White females receive NO preferences in admissions. Why should they, as they make up more than half of all new admittees to colleges and universities?
This is a conservative website. If you want to spout lies about racist discrimination, go back to DU and stop trolling here.
To: Henrietta
Scholarships are not related to admissions. You do not know the character of students applying and it's just as easy for a black person to say a white person is in something for the color of their skin. You have no debate as far private scholarships are concerned because private groups can give money to whoever they want to.
