Yes, I heard the story a couple of years ago that that abbreviation has been around since the beginning, and is a perfectly legitimate way of spelling Christmas.

Thanks, that was my impression also, and I even think Xmas is a nicer way to write it, when the recipient knows that it is not only legit, but traditional.
