"Most living Americans do have a connection with slavery. They have inherited the preferential advantage, if they are white, or the loathsome disadvantage, if they are Black; and those positions are virtually as alive today as they were in the 19th century."

Try telling my daughter, who is currently filling out scholarship applications for next school year, that she has a "preferential advantage." She is acutely aware of the fact that if her skin was black or brown instead of white, she wouldn't be strapped with thousands of dollars in student loans to pay back after she graduates.

White, middle class kids need not apply.

She ought not to fill out any ethnic/racial categories in the first place. They have nothing to do with education. If everyone did that then universities would get the message.

Being a white middle class girl about to graduate from college, I will be strapped thousands of dollars when I get done. The thing that makes me mad is that my roommate and best friend of 4 years is an adopted Korean girl who has grown up with a white family in rural Minnesota. Not any different than me. However, she gets thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid because she is Asian- and I am a better student out of the two of us. She has zero interest in the culture or anything. She doesn't even want to go to South Korea (too close to North Korea for her!). Society says we are completely equal but obviously we are not!
