Considering that he denied committing the murders when he did them, I doubt he really found religion. However, as to coming to faith after committing heinous crimes, it has to do with the death penalty. When death is fifty miles away, he's not that scary. When you're looking him in the face, that's one big SOB. They don't think they need Jesus when they're committing the crimes. When they're getting ready to leave prison wearing nothing but a toe-tag, they start to think about accountability for their actions. I've known very few true atheists.
