I've been hearing variations of this canard for over 10 years, that academics and journalists are liberal because they're "smarter" than everyone else. To me it only proves their own elitist biases -- assuming that anyone who disagrees with you is stupid is one of the most foolish mistakes you can make.A M E N ! ! !
Here's another canard I've heard for years which seems appropriate to this discussion:
"Those who can do! Those who cannot teach!"

Hey, I was a teacher! Of course, I planned on teaching until I had kids, which makes me not fit in with the others. I quit 3 years ago when I had my kids too. Now that I have carefully removed myself from being a stereotypical teacher (there were only a handful of us), I would have to say that a minimum 85% of all teachers are jerks that not only have forgotten that they used to be kids, they have forgotten how to think for themselves.
Let me also say that I had a college prof tell our class that acid was safer to do than weed. Oh yeah, she was one of the best and brightest alright! (sarcasm)

Although I do have quite a few conservative friends who are middle and high school teachers, that statement most definitely applies to academia.
I can thank my first poli sci professor, who was running on a quasi-socalist platform against the incumbent GOP congressman for pushing me into politics. When he got trounced, the reaction around campus was just outright shock. My first and by far most enteratining campaign.
