My car can barely pick up AM for some reason unless I am 10 or so miles outside of the city I think AM broadcasts in a geographically narrow band, so Boston stations broadcast north and south instead of east and west, where half of the signal would be lost at sea. I can barely pick up RKO on my car radio at 495 and the Pike.

Very weird. The farther away I get from Boston the better the RKO reception. I live in a downtown building and have a below sea level garage that I park in. The only two stations I can pick up at two or three levels under sea level and tons of concrete are 96.9 and 401.1 WBCN. AM is just horrible in my car. But in my apartment I can easily pick up any AM station. It is weird- many of my friends say the same thing as you. What is with bad AM reception in cars in Boston?
