I believe those center rocks are about the size of a man's shoe.

Interesting how quick some are to see design.

Ozymandius by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said--"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart . . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandius, King of Kings,
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

The layering structure of the rock implies that they are sedimentary rock, meaning it formed by sediment buildup.. which means LIQUID WATER WAS ON MARS AT ONE POINT.

Or at least it is very very very strong circumstantial evidence that Mars did at one time have liquid water.

Great. So NASA had $12 billion more to "blow" on Columbia and Challenger. ;^)

It sure would be something if those rocks turned out to be limestone!

Yeah with a couple of nematode fossils down the middle. Too bad there was no pick or hammer installed on mer.

True enough. But chem tests will tell, and the instruments are on site. Even so, the rocks themselves show layering reminiscent of sedimentary rock, suggesting water somewhere in the equation.

LOL. I nearly flunked geology. My professor was Ben Stein's identical twin brother, the one from "Wonder Years".

Very interesting - would such a discovery imply a practical application ??

It always puzzles me why people don't think it's worth while to spend five minutes checking, before posting urban legends like this.

My advice: stay away from YThe West Wing, and you won't get fed garbage like this.

Even the urban legend only claims it was 12 million (earlier 1.5 million). Are you unclear on the difference between a million and a billion?

Not only do they look sedimentary (though layers of volcanic ash might also look like this) but they're tilted, implying tectonic activity.

It looks like Pyrite. Which some who objected to the mission might find appropriate.
