Airport Power Outage #1:

Power Outage Delays Some Birmingham Flights

Birmingham International Blackout Lasts About An Hour
POSTED: 10:28 am CST February 14, 2004

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- An hour-long electrical power failure at Birmingham International Airport caused some flight delays Saturday morning.

Airport spokesman Patty Howell said the airport lost power for about an hour, temporarily shutting down security checkpoints and affecting 11 outgoing flights.

Howell said the airport's emergency generators kicked in, but weren't programmed to push power through the entire airport. Because of that, the security checkpoints were idled and couldn't screen passengers or luggage.

However, the delayed flights had all departed by late Saturday morning.
