Certain types of speech has always had lesser protection than others. Fighting words (such as saying something about someone's mother) for example. Inciting to riot. Threatening the president's life is a felony. Generally, speech that encourages violence is NOT free.
Giving "expert help and advice" to terrorists (aka murderers) clearly falls in the category of unprotected speech, even if we weren't at war with them.
