When he returned from Vietnam, he expressed his shame about his military service because it was politically expedient. I tend to agree with your thinking. While I won't assume the nature of Kerry's wounds to be self-inflicted, given his known lying, his current deceits and his political nature, I won't rule out less than 'heroic' incidents either. It would be very interesting and educational to examine F'ing's service records and determine the actual substance of his tales.
