I'm killing time by watching the History Channel and how dynamite and nitro were developed. Man, what a risky deal making that stuff was.

Wasn't one of Nobel's relatives killed making nitro.

Yup
In 1864. Emil, Alfred Nobel's brother, was killed during the preparation of nitroglycerine at Heleneborg, Stockholm.
I got this info from the Nobel website biographical timeline page, btw.
The Nobel website is here.

Great to have everyone back together for this late night thread.
NASA TV is currently discussing Solar Maximum activity.
The live coverage is supposed to begin in about 30 minutes.
I'm expecting news on whether or not the vehicle successfully rolled down the front/forward access ramp and is now sitting on Mars.

Opportunity's location is in the middle of this small crater.
Beats me how they got this 3-D map of the terrain.!

I'll try and stick around for a bit, but may have to drop off soon.
From looking at the hole in the pic, that's a pretty deep hole the little rover is in.
How much ponypower does a rover have anyway, I wonder?

They used the pan cam images, and more than enough analytic geometry to give a dozen nerds a splitting headache. They know the rover's position in x,y,z axis, camera position, etc. Aren't computers neat. With pencil and paper They would be lucky if their grandchildrengot the picture finished.

NASA Commentary starting live from Opportunity MER-B control room.
Just a few minutes ago first telemetry was received as the first 10 cm move was made, called "bump".
