When Bush takes an action that upholds conservative values, I support him.
When Bush takes an action that violates conservative values, but does so for political gain, I am not happy, but I can understand it.
But this does neither. Given the history of this issue, it amounts to a slap in the face of conservatives. And I don't see how Bush or his advisors could possibly believe that he will gain more votes from the left by this relatively insignificant increase, than he will lose by further alienating his already-alienated base.
There are over 800 posts on this thread, and I have yet to see one person offer a rational explanation of how Bush could possibly expect a net political gain from this move.
This is not "strategery." As far as I can tell, this is just plain STUPIDITY. And I will not support stupidity.
Skip the entire article and read the last 4 paragraphs starting with Alec Baldwin. I know, most of us detest Baldwin, but here he actually makes sense. He points out where the NEA brings far more revenue into the National Treasury as well as the economy than the government spends to fund them.
There are many perspectives on how to view the possible motives of this proposal. It may also be in line with making the NEA self supporting. Whatever the case, I would bet that the President's reasons have something to do with a financial gain for the future of our economy.
