There is similar research going on in Canada. There is a simulated Mars base of the Mars Society at Devon Island.

"The long-expected space flight will take place on a bright summer, autumn or winter morning of 2005 on the outskirts of Moscow. Astronauts will take their seats, the head of the project will say go and the first in the world history manned expedition to Mars will begin."

Unless you're one of those idiot kids who tied one end of a rope to a merry-go-round, and the other end to their truck...

As everyone knows, the Russians also invented the telephone, baseball, and psychokinesis.

And while we all joke about it, the Russians continue to explore near and outer space, the Chinese are working on catching up, and the US was dead in the water. President Bush's Mars initiative is very needed.

IF we don't keep reaching for the stars, we might as well start digging more holes in the ground.

There's an old joke going back to soviet times.
Pravda means truth. Izvestia means news ( and that was the name of another official soviet news paper.
So the joke went:

Theres No pravda in Izvestia,
and no izvestia in Pravda.

Some things never change.....

i agree. in fact the russians have allready expressed an intrest in playing a part in our future space endevours. i say we take them up on it, they have done a lot of research and have a lot of know how. they just lack the funds.
