People in Maine may sniff out phonies, but this campaign has Democrats not voting for policies, character, etc. but for the one that has the best chance of beating Bush.
They do not care who the Dem. nominee is. The only thing impt to them now is electability. Popularity has nothing to do with it. Policies have nothing to do with it. Their whole energy totally devoted to whipping Bush...no matter who it is.
When that is the goal, and nothing else, it will be quite difficult for Bush and Co. to combat..esp. with question marks among conservatives.

I think you are getting a bit too worried without waiting for the real campaign to start.
With all the hype about polls, they are notoriously wrong. Rasmussen is a big time Leftie himself and a Dem pundit.
Wait till the Pubbies launch their ads as well as start counter punching the DUm's lies.
The idea of such false information getting out to the lukewarm voters out there who would otherwise stay home because they think plenty of Pubbies will show up and win without needing their vote, this may have the opposite effect. They may become extremely motivated and get out to the pols because they don't want a repeat of last election.
