I've not been seduced by some silly ring nor by anything else.

As you KNOW, this election is between a democrat and President Bush. The choice could not be more clear: President Bush by a landslide.

Also Pres Bush does have a duty to protect the borders, but it does not help if the governors, mayors, and other local politicians refuse to enforce their own state and municipal laws. Democrats still hold a sizable number of the state legislatures and even if the Pres tried to deport even a small number of illegals, they would stampede to the nearest court, claming violations of civil rights.

Some of us need to read it over often, especially when we are sometimes disappointed by mistakes he, as all presidents make.

I can name a handful of things I consider to be pretty serious mistakes.As far as I am concerned, supporting Spector, and this immigration thing are a couple.

I want to forget those things for now and make sure he gets elected because overall I am very pleased.

Congress spends money, Bush did not attach the pork to those bills

Here's how it has been working lately. A spending bill comes up - Congress wants 400 billion, Bush say he'll veto anything over 375 bil, they send him a 389 billion bill, and he signs it.

For me, a big spender President would ask if 400 was enough, how about 410? An obstructionist President would veto anything over 350, force a veto override and lose support for any of his pet bills (oh say like defense spending for the war), a realist conservative would slow spending as much as possible while using the compromise to build up support for key issues....like the war.

But that means knowing you'll win some and lose some in the nasty system of Washington. ('Democracy is a terrible form of government but it is better than anything else' attitude)

From what I recall when Reagan was President, people weren't talking about his "greatness" in the first three years, either, it was essentially the same thing. Average folks liked him, many folks adored him, but he continued to come under loud vocal pressure from the Democrat Party and hard-core conservatives each time they weren't 100% happy with something he did.

I'm not going to wait five or ten years to talk about how "Great" Dubya is. Viewed through the lens of history it is already quite evident he is a hero for the Light Side and a bane to the Dark.

And you know, these things are all great accomplishments that conservatives can take great pride in.

I do.

But, there are also great disappoinments. The most glaring is the amnesty plan. The magnitude of the illegal alien invasion issue is so great, especially in California, that all the good Bush can do on other issues can be negated by his invitation to throngs of economic refugees in Mexico to come here.

What good is giving these "workers" legal status here when they then fall under the same minimum wage laws that employers will STILL try to get around by hiring the new wave of illegals?

What good is beefing up border security when Immigration agents and law enforcement have no power and are in fact barred from arresting illegals and deporting them?

The issue is rightly triggering criticism of Bush. Why he's doing this, I don't know. If he's taking a page from the Gray Davis Playbook of Pandering, this will blow up in his face and he'll have himself and Rove to blame.

Thank you, all I want is a little perspective. The President is not a king, he cant, by the flick of the wrist, just impose laws left and right. Also states have just as much responsiblity to secure their border in as much, the states of arizona, california, new mexico, and texas. Those governors if they really wanted to call a state emergency and mobilize the national guard and enforce the border laws.

My response to the WSJ article this morning. I am not sure how many readers take the time to read newspaper on line reader comments, but I do not want to leave the critics of President Bush sole occupancy of any forum:-----

Thank you for discussing the reality of the immigration situation as it exists in the United States today. Too many conservatives are not facing reality; President Bush does. Obviously the status quo is not acceptable. Standards for residence in the U.S. have to be recognized by all--employers, local law enforcement officers, INS or homeland security management and officers, and elected officials across the country.

Right now there is no unity of action among all these various groups. To people who blame the employer group, I ask, why did you not blame the employers when the Democrats were in power in Washington? The INS appears to have had a policy of not cooperating with employers who had questions about documentation. Also the INS has been glacially slow in processing papers for persons trying to follow the rules of legal entry. If President Bush can change the behavior in the federal bureaucracy, it will go a long way to improving the situation for all in our country.

Our President did NOT propose an amnesty

He proposed to legalize millions of Illegal Aliens. Doesn't matter how the hairs are split, it's an Amnesty, just like the last big one.

I need to do some research and add a new column for the Clinton Amnesties. I'm fairly certain all of the answers would be yes for him, as well, except that he only Amnestied a bit over a million Illegals.

You can't propose to reward millions of Illegal Aliens with legal status without condoning illegal entry. This is the lesson of Amnesty, and it seems some need to learn it again.

In the San Diego sector of the border "we have two to three times the number we had a few weeks ago," Senior Border Patrol Agent Shawn Moran told HUMAN EVENTS. Moran is spokesman for the local San Diego chapter of the National Border Patrol Council, the patrolmen's union.

"In one place, we have eight times," said Moran.

Asked if this could just be a seasonal increase, Moran replied, "We usually get something of an increase at this time of year, but nothing like this." The trend showed no signs of abating, he said.

Moran says he is certain Bush's plan is motivating the illegal aliens who have caused the spike in illegal border crossings. "Because 95% of the people we're catching say that's why," Moran said. "They say they're coming for the amnesty. A lot of these people have not been caught before. They have no immigration histories."

Moran also said the Bush proposal has caused a change in the urgency and demography of illegal border crossers. "We're catching them repeatedly throughout the week," Moran said. "They're desperate to get this amnesty even though we told them it's only a proposal. . . . We're catching more women and children than we have since 1999."

Congress spends money, Bush did not attach the pork to those bills, those wheeling and dealing Congress Critters did. Sure he signed them, but the Republicans in Congress agreed to the Pork to get enough votes for passage. Blame your Congressman and Senators
