I apologize for my ignorance on this but tonight is my first night on this forum - what are the meanings of the following two phrases I've seen in this thread:
"ping" and "bump"
To: Tobasco
Ping---I am just calling attention to the post for another (specific)poster to see.(From there latest comments page)
Bump----Either acknowledging a post or thread as being important or making it show up again in the latest post screen.(now called messages).

Hello and welcome to FReeRepublic.A bump sends an article to the top of the forum and also bookmarks it in the posters comments for an easy find later on. A ping is sent to a group or a list of other freepers or an individual to alert them of an article. This is somewhat of a close nit group with a wide variance of ideas and political conviction. One of the things stressed here is truthfulness, you can be an ass if that is what you are as long as you are civil about it but don't try to be a saint and be found out later you are not. Whatever you post , remember you might be called on it down the road. Freepers are very unforgiving and have the memory of an elephant.Freepers are also the most loving, helpful and thoughtful people you will ever find. Again, welcome to FReeRepublic, may your stay be rewarding and educational.
