I think the reason it would make sense for this thread to be in news, because frequently people do post news articles, even articles they only post here -- I mean legitimate news articles from "conventional, accepted" media sources.
I know I have done that a number of times, and so have others. Many times people also post links to articles posted on FR, which are related to WoT, which some of us may miss, but this thread is sort of a summary of all that. This is something like a repository of all or most War on Terror news, and speculation, naturally.
As for the "chat" aspect -- well, in other threads, which start out with a news article, and you know how many end up...
I don't know about the mechanics of how you handle the threads and why it's easier if something is in chat vs. news, but while sometimes people do go off on some theory, or discuss strange message boards, there really is enough genuine news posted, that in my opinion, it deserves to stay in news.
Hopefully people will keep bickering, hitting the abuse button and going too far off topic to a minimum. :)

"As for the "chat" aspect -- well, in other threads, which start out with a news article, and you know how many end up..."Exactly. So many news and breaking news threads end up containing a few joke posts; cartoon posts; opinion posts; heckling posts; etc. This is what I like about FR. It is good that we can lighten up the serious stuff happening in the world.
