My hubby snatched the puter for the last few hours, does your post mean they've pretty much confirmed the ricin?

They said final confirmation tomorrow. I just missed another update because of those darn emergency message voice alerts, we're having flash flood warnings for the fire burn areas here.

I was just doing a search on Dog disease. Please tell me that there is no way to turn rabies into an air borne virus.

Rabies

Description

Rabies, an acute, fatal encephalomyelitis caused by neurotropic viruses in the family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus, is almost always transmitted by an animal bite that inoculates the virus into wounds. Very rarely, rabies has been transmitted by nonbite exposures that introduce the virus into open wounds or mucous membranes. All mammals are believed to be susceptible, but reservoirs are carnivores and bats. Although dogs are the main reservoir in resource-poor countries, the epidemiology of the disease differs sufficiently from one region or country to another to warrant the medical evaluation of all mammal bites.

Rabies and bats
Rabies is the most important public health hazard associated with bats, but its impact has been vastly exaggerated. The first State to report rabies in a bat was Florida in 1953. By 1978, rabies had been reported in 30 of the 40 bat species normally found in the United States and in all 48 contiguous United States, but no increase in the rate of infection has been detected. In 26 years, there have been only eight human fatalities in the United States and Canada attributed to actual bites of rabid bats and two human deaths probably due to nonbite aerosol transmission.

There is quite a bit more on the Arabic language forums that is pretty frightening. That's just the tip of the iceburg.

But we cannot stop living our lives because some Bozo decides to go post something scary on an Arabic forum.

I read the stuff. I pass the stuff on to those who know how to get it in the hands of the appropriate law enforcement officers. Then I let it go.

We have no way of knowing whether these posters are legitimate, and have actual information, or whether they are some sicko who gets their jollies from scaring people.

So read the information; think about it if it doesn't cause you major anxiety; use common sense.

Common sense says have to have basic supplies of water, and canned goods on hand - enough to keep your family going for a week or two. As someone said before, think bad ice storm.

I think all we can do is stay vigilent, but without being afraid. That means we need to notice anything out of the ordinary, including any illnesses of those around us.

It means not letting the car run down to empty but keeping a half tank or more (I'm REALLY bad about running the car down to under a quarter tank!). It means having an extra 2 weeks stash of medications if there are any you really need. If you have infants in diapers, or on formula, then make sure you have those items covered. Same for pet food and kitty litter.

So use your brain. Filter the information. Remember that there are a lot of good people out here monitoring the Arabic postings and turning information over to law enforcement on a daily basis. So even if a posting sounds ominous, imminent, and completely credible, remember that there is a really good chance law enforcement can get in there and control the situation.

And at the risk of sounding like a cliche, don't forget the power of prayer, both in terms of helping maintain your composure in frightening times, but also in terms of asking for protection and blessings upon this country.

Rabies virus

Agent summary : Rhabdoviridiae. Rabies. Worlfd wide. Zoonosis: canines, bats, others, contact. Vaccine. HAZARD GROUP 3

Airborne HIV does not worry me as much as airborne rabies would. Airborne rabies would be a truly horrific pathogen. It has a gestation period in the weeks which would give the infected plenty of time to infect others, and it is 100% fatal for those infected. It can infect many different species some of which breed rapidly thereby limiting the effectiveness of quarantine and ensuring reservoirs of the disease survive in the wild. There will always be a time delay between the discovery of the danger from a microbe, and the discovery of ways to protect from the danger. As long as humans delve into the mysteries of virulence and contagion, we will be accepting the risk that that time delay represents.

If scientists discover how to make the nightmare viruses spread by the airborn route, the counter-discoveries of treatment modalities might take too long to be useful. Something for homeland security to think about. Posted by RB at January 1, 2004 10:49 AM

The point is that any mechanism by which the virus can gain entry into tissues could potentially lead to infection. Skin contact is not enough, but contact of the virus with the mucous membranes is enough (e.g. in your nose, eyes, mouth etc.), since these do not seem to represent an effective physical barrier to viral entry. Even consumption of infected animal tissue has been said to transmit the virus across the intestinal membranes. The reality is that such contact is far less common than bites, at least historically. This may not seem obvious, but it is not common for a person to inhale animal saliva, or rub it in their eyes. But it CAN happen.

Evidence for the existence of airborne rabies infection is several-fold. First, lab animals have been seen to be infected by inhaled virus. Second, there are case reports of lab workers working with viral solutions who have gotten rabies by inhalation of aerosols of that solution. Finally, simply being in a cave where a colony of bats lives (without any bites) can transmit rabies. The commonality of all of these situations is that the dose of inhaled virus is high. While I cant say this with any certainty, I would be surprised if a single bat could produce enough airborne saliva to cause a real risk of infection by inhalation.
