If you have blood sugar/insulin problems, fruit juices will indeed spell trouble for you, as fruit JUICES are a very concentrated source of sugar. Eating the whole fruit will slow absorption of the sugar, partly because of the fiber content.

Not everyone can handle the same load of carbohydrates, particularly the concentrated sugars in fruit juices.

If you are one of those lucky people who can handle fruit juices, why, then drink all you want.

As for the rest of us, including people like me, we do better with fewer carbohydrates.

There is solid science for the rationale of eating low-carb, if you bother to read about it. Try any of the "Protein Power" books... they have a lot of well-written, easy-to-understand explanations throughout, especially the "Protein Power LifePlan" book.

Yes fresh squeezed oranges and freshly juiced carrot BUT not the boxed stuff that sits in grocery stores.

I have discovered the root of the problem... LAWYERS

Crawford said the Atkins diet and Dr. Phil's diet leave room for orange juice consumption. But he said lawyers were reviewing claims against orange juice made in "The South Beach Diet" and other publications.

Well I prefer grapefruit juice especially from the ruby red variety.

What frightens the orange growers is that the Atkins diet actually works and its the only one I've ever seen that does work. The weight comes off and stays off as long as you stay on the diet.

I've lost sixty pounds, my cholesterol is down, and I feel better than I have in ten years. I'm not going back to a conventional diet, my health is too important.

The Atkins diet is not a fad it is a permanent lifestyle change. That's why the orange growers are in a panic.

If you have stock in oranges, its time to sell. They won't be coming back.

I guess you'd rather people stay fat and drink OJ than lay off it for a while and lose weight?

I think most people would rather lose the lard and have you consider them "lame" than drink OK when they are on a diet.

After 30 years of proven results the weight of evidence is now so overwhelming that the American medical establishment has finally had to acknowledge that the late Dr. Atkins was right and the govenment and "dieticans" were wrong. A fad. Right.

I have hypoglycemia and I low-carb (Atkins) to keep my blood sugars steady. Losing and maintaining my ideal weight is just a bonus. It's been almost 2 years since I started. OJ isn't "health nectar" to my system. If I drank it, my endocrinologist would probably try to strangle me if I weren't already comatose from the blood sugar crash.

So we should just continue to be fat-asses? With all the talk about America becoming an obese nation they should thank the Atkins diet for reversing the trend.

Carb-laden diets are the fad. Refined sugars & bleached processed flour crept into our diets significantly in the last 20 years.

I did Atkins over 1 1/2 years ago on a lark while recovering from a foot injury that left me sedentary for 3 months. I was amazed, not just at the weight I lost, but also at the amount of really crappy carbs laced into everyday processed foods. So much so that after my recovery, I stayed on the diet.

I made my own personal adjustments to the diet. I lay off the heavy creams & red meats & bacon. (I had a spike in my cholesterol after the early phase, which disappeared 6 months after the adjustments.) Because I get more than my share of exercise, I do allow more carbs than most on maintenance. Weight dropped 5 more lbs (& held for over a year).

I dont miss pasta, coke (used to drink 1 a day), candy & junk snacks (used to be daily). Atkins showed me how crappy I felt after eating this stuff...why would I ever go back?
