I believe must address the immigration, illegal immigration problem. We must not have these rules that preclude local law enforcement from acting. The process of work permits must have a stick with the carrot.

The reason no one does anything about the illegals now is that local polititions pander. There are some here that will add to the economy and eventually make good citizens...then there are others like those described here.

The only stick that will work is if the interests of the States converge with the Feds. States have no interest in helping with a problem they benefit from. The Feds have no power under the 10th amendment to force states to enforce federal law. It is a constitutional catch 22. Even after 911, states refused to participate in INS efforts to sweep airports and other places with large illegal alien workers. The only state that did was Florida and that had more to do with the family relationship between Jeb and GW than anything else. The INS has only 2000 field agents to enforce immigration laws and with 8 to 10 million in illegals in place, the Feds cannot even put a dent in the problem without all out cooperation from state and local government. States benefit from illegal immigration and that is an ugly truth no one is willing to face.
