Roswell gears up for Bush's visit this week

When President Bush stops in Roswell on Thursday morning as part of a two-day trip to three states, he is expected to speak in a crowded civic center about the nation's war on terrorism.

"We're used to big rallies, but we have to remind ourselves that this is a completely different kind of event," said Teresa Davis-McKee, media coordinator for New Mexico for the Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential campaign.

The event is free and open to the public, but advance tickets are required.

"I called Congressman (Steve) Pearce's office for tickets, and they were just swamped," Davis-McKee said. "I've put my name on the list for tickets."

Vangie Garcia, secretary to Mayor Bill B. Owen, said the phone rang constantly Tuesday.

"It's been crazy," she said. "Right now, we have more names on the list than we'll probably have tickets."

The scheduled visit has stirred up the city of about 45,000 people, but information about his speech was not released until Tuesday.

"Everybody is real excited but real puzzled about why we haven't gotten any information," said Roswell resident and Bush supporter Mary Reeves. "I would really like to see him and hear him speak and just hear the truth right from his mouth."
