Seems like Ben Frankin had an opinion on older women: "They don't tell, they don't swell...."

If his "career" has taken a blow, he has only himself to blame. He made his choice.
I was a HUGE fan, but I can't disregard an actor's personal life and the choices they make. Bedding one's former step-daughter is not acceptable to me.

"Learn to do character acting, like the great actresses of the past...."
There are character roles for these actresses if they are interested in pursuing them. The complaint seems to be that thay are no longer treated and paid as they had been when they were able to land leading lady-type roles.
I personally have seen Charlotte Rampling in about 10 movies in the last 6 years. In most of these movies she had a good part. Given the fact that the once allluring Ms. Rampling now looks like death warmed over is testament to the fact that if you have good acting skills you can still continue to get work after 40. That these older actresses will not be cast in roles that require sexual allure should surprise no one.

as these actresses age, they have to count more on their acting than their sex appeal.
that said, some women maintain sex appeal for longer than others....way beyond the conventional wisdom espoused by some youngblood horndogs on this thread.
women don't really even start to take off till early 30s in my experience....how long they go after that depends on genetics, luck, health and attitude.
I'm suprised at Charlotte Rampling...she has had a number of criticaly acclaimed art movies in recent years and has never been box office...why is she whining?
Marguiles is still young...liberal harridan that she is...maybe she should work on those eyebrows.
Diane Lane looks like she smokes too much although she is still quite sexual in my view.
I don't care much for the rest of them anyhow....especially Rosanna (damn right I've had 4 abortions and proud of it)....too feral.
But, it's not fair to be honest. Aging is not fair to women and the quest for youthful beauty. That's just life. But they live longer and get to hang out with their pals and summer in Tuscany and spend the old dead knuckledragger's insurance/estate. It all works out in the end usually.
We can do a thread on over 40 babes if anyone likes....I'm almost married to one. (don't anyone pick on me for bragging on my wife)

than some embarrassing moth eaten hag with breast that look like a pair of silk socks with an orange (maybe a lime in Meg's case) in each one. This line of thinking is cruel. Would you describe your mother that way? Your sister? Your wife, when you are over 40? These people you are talking about are pretty attractive, for the most part. I don't care for the actresses themselves or their whining, but I just felt PAIN at your description of us over-40s. So that's how the average man sees us?

You're young I assume.
I hope your wife ages gracefully.
When I was a young buck, I thought women over 30 were old too. Boy did I have a lot to learn....a nice lesson too I might add.

How old is Merle Streep? I would think she could have good roles. Cher did well enough after 40 --- and is Demi Moore still with the young guy? I'm sure her career isn't hurting.Meryl Streep is 52 or 53.
Demi Moore is still with Ashton Kutcher (kid on that 70s show)I believe but I think she said they were not getting hitched.
There are pleanty of talented actresses over 40 who work regularly.
Hell, Goldie Hawn is almost 60 and no great talent yet stays busy.
Some of these ageing starlets just refuse to age gracefully imho.

Allen still makes movies. However, he produces, directs, and watches the bottom line himself. The reason he can make movies is because he produces them on such a shoestring budget that they are almost guaranteed to make a profit. He then lives well and rolls the profits from his previous films into the next one. He's knocking movies out for a couple of million, which guarantees a profit, even if they only play in art houses.
Most of these women could get involved in small films that would play to a more narrow audience. While I have no interest in seeing them, there is probably enough interest that some of them could get made. Examples of such movies are Steel Magnolias, Divine Secrets of the YaYah Sisterhood, Boys on the Side (not about over 40's, but definitely a chick flick), and on and on. As far as I'm concerned, there's too much sisterhood and not enough yaya, but there are other over forty stories that they could work in.
I think what these ladies are complaining about though, is that they're not getting the "star treatment" anymore. The days of being able to demand and receive special treatment are over. There's also the issue that once you've been cast as a "type", it's difficult to play against that type. The same thing happens to child actors. How many of the cast of "Facts of Life" have gotten work, even though they're all still under forty? None, because people can't accept them in different roles.
Many of these actresses are also trying to continue to look as if they're younger than they are, and that makes it difficult to cast them in character roles. I'm not talking about actresses like Keaton, who hasn't had a face lift and just tries to stay in good shape. Amanda Blake looked Chinese by the time she died, she'd had her face pulled so many times. Maggie Smith, for example, has played Professor McGonagall in all the Harry Potter movies, but she wouldn't have been able to play that part if she had succumbed to the temptation to have four or five face lifts.
BTW, I teach in a college, and Kirsten Dunst is in. Get ready guys, Cameron Diaz is considered over the hill, as is Alicia Silverstone, if they even know who she is.

Come to think of it, Diane Keaton turned 58 just last week, too. She's the only reason I look back with fondness on Woody Allen movies.
To: Mr Rogers
Excellent points.
The problem is that when people are good, they are good in a very wide variety of ways; should you film to indugle that nature, you limit your audience. By contrast, when people are bad, many of them are bad in ways that are highly common and reliable; sex and violence --that's simple!
Sadly, for marketing types, filming bad stuff is a good way of limiting business risk.

True - ever notice when the liberals rail against Big Corporation, they never include the media corporations. It's always big oil or car manufacturers and such like that.
