British indomitability and ingenuity are not yet extinct. I wonder how much of the problem is being caused by the public employees union. I have a feeling that this problem would not be there if someone like Thatcher was PM.

The will have to get the visa and the visa will be valid for ten years. In other words ten dollars PER YEAR average.
Once England gets their system upgraded they will be back on the waiver program. This is a tempest in a teapot.

ummm joint a point here........although us Aussies and the Brits have enjoyed the freedom of going to the US without a visa, the same cannot be said for US citizens wanting to come to Australia. They ahve always required a visa and still do at a cost of $150 Australian. So lets be careful when we say its a nice way to treat allies coz us Aussies are at fault as well

g'day mate,
as an Australian who has been able to travel to the US free of charge for years I wouldnt mind paying. I have had my passport updated anyway but its you guys who should be hollering coz as I understand it you have always had to have a visa to visit australia at a cost of $150 Oz or about $80 US...and now everyone is saying you guys are treating allies poorly. Well we have forever by the sound of it. And big deal $100, I dont know what all the fuss is about to be honest. It wont stop me visiting your fair shores again thats for sure...
cheers

$100 for a visa? I would not pay it. It is a $100 application fee for a nonimmigrant visa. The visa is good for ten years.
That means you can use the visa in your old non-chipped passport to get on planes to the USA for ten years.
Each time you deplane and talk to INS (BICE, whatever) they then admit you for a period of time consistent with your purpose of visit. This can be up to six months for a tourist. So Nigel (or Mohammad) from Manchester can come for a 3 week visit this and every summr for the next ten years, using his $100 visa.

For my part, I hope it will never cost you anything more than a plane ticket.
It is always a pleasure to have good friends stop by to visit, and I'd rather you not have to shove money through the mail slot before coming through the front door.
