Permit me a brief suggestion...

I believe I read one time, here on FR, a solution to many of our domestic crime problems and at the same time providing a way of bolstering a healthy foreign policy efforts by supporting Mexico's economy and reducing illegal immigration.

Since everyone is so in love with 'off-shore' sourcing of labor, manufacturing and resources, why not contract with Mexico to house our felony prisoners? The Mexican government could get the juicy $20-30K/prisoner budgets, the prisoners could be kept a long ways away in routinely inspected facilities and everyone could be happy. Well, everyone but the prisoners, of course.

I'm sure that there are certain things that the Mexican government would frown upon in prisoner conduct and, conceivably, there might be some reductions in the kind of 'freedoms' that American prisoners take for granted. But since felons lose their constitutional rights when convicted, what the heck.

It seems to me that this might also induce American criminals to reconsider criminal careers if they knew that they ran a chance of incarceration down Mexico's sunny way. Additionally, Mexican illegals that end up in the system might also be disappointed by an ignominious return to their homeland.

I don't know. Seems like a pretty good idea with as much sense as other schemes that are up and floating these days - maybe more.

As regards your post (#50), that seems to be a good idea.

OTOH, perhaps we should build some prisons in the most remote, cold (to repeat myself) parts of Alaska, working out a financial deal with the state of Alaska, of course. Anybody, especially those accustomed to the warm climates, would think twice before commiting a crime and facing the prospect of ending up there.

Such prisons would have the benefit of not having to worry too much about escapees. The bears and wolves, not to mention the harsh weather, would take care of any foolish enough to want to leave.
