That's been true of me lately too. If someone wants to disagree with this Bush proposal, or that Bush policy, that's fine. I don't agree 100% of the time either. But to say, "Because of this-or-that Bush policy, I'm not voting for him again this election..." what with the high stakes in this election is foolish and short-sighted. But I've learned it's no use "debating" with the naysayers. All one can really do with them is rhetorically wack them on the side of the head for being such cranky and immature toads.

Ed Schultz (the liberals' answer to Rush) was just on Gibson's "The Big Story." Gibson would counter one lie of Schultz's, Schultz would ignore it then change the subject, and then Gibson would correct him again.

This place has been unbearable since the Immigration Policy was announced.......a veritable feeding frenzy for angry men to say vile and vicious things to anyone in their paths, and a cessation of civil discourse.

Most of us in that 91% are pretty adult about politics. We understand that no two human beings agree 100% on anything — that even with the people closest to us in our lives (parents, spouses, children) we can have vehement, even bitter disagreements and still not discard the whole person.

Okay, I don't think that implying that those who disagree with you are childish is very "adult". In fact, isn't your whole point that adults realize that they can disagree on some issues and not "discard the whole person." Yet you do the same thing by insinuating that any conservative who doesn't support Bush is childish. You are a marvelous example of a hypocrite.

As to the substance of what I said in my original post, you cannot dispute that Bush's Medicare plan and immigration proposal angered conservatives. You cannot dispute that the recess appointment of Pickering will rally more conservatives around Bush. Accordingly, givin the timing of this recess appointment, a rational person could infer that Bush, realizing the growing discontentment among conservatives, timed this recess appointment so as not to lose his base. I did not say that he lost a "majority" of his base. A shift of 1%-5% of his base could lose the election. I also did not imply that this was a bad thing. I would love him to appeal to conservatives more. The fact that he doesn't more often is my only gripe with the administration.

Most, if not all of the self-proclaimed "real" conservatives who bitch and moan about Dubya on these threads would probably have had exactly the same things to say about Ronald Reagan had FR been around in the 1980's.

What "percentage" of disagreement is sufficent for you to vote against a candidate: 50% . . . 25% . . . 1%? Reagan was far from 100% in line with the conservative position. But he got more leeway when he did depart from the conservative line (e.g. the 1986 amnesty) because Reagan did not have a domestic record that is as liberal as Bush.

But I can disagree with President Bush's policy proposal and still never forget his magnificent leadership in the aftermath of 9/11 and the anthrax attacks. I haven't forgotten that was one of the darkest periods in American history. This nation was shaken to its core in a way we had not been probably since the Civil War. But we had one shining, poised, genuine beam of light guiding us out of the dark. That beam of light was named George W. Bush. His tears were our tears; his anger, our anger; his resolve, our resolve. He lifted us up then. So I have no intention of abandoning him now, no matter what policy difference I might have with him. I am not ashamed to say I love this President.

You've said well exactly what I think and feel. There was only one politician who ever brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes, and that was Ronald Reagan. But over the past 2-1/2 years, I've been moved many times by George W. Bush's sincerity, integrity, decency, love for this nation and what it stands for, for our place in the world as an example of freedom and goodness, and for his love for the men and women who defend our way of life. I guess I get emotional about Pres. Bush primarily because of the pain and suffering this nation went through on 9/11/01, and for the pain and hurt that still remains, and for Pres. Bush's stellar leadership during that time and since.

George W. Bush is the real deal, and by that I don't mean he's a "pure conservative." I mean he's the kind of leader who is truly anointed by God for his time and place in history (if you're willing to think in those terms), the kind of leader who comes around maybe once in a generation if we're so graced. Look at the leftists in Congress, the media, and in the general public. It would have been easy for this nation to roll over after 9/11 into a fetal position and question ourselves in a stupor of self-doubt and guilt. The fact we didn't is due solely to George W. Bush. I respect this man above all others on the political scene. He is a giant while everyone else is a pigmy. And I'm not ashamed to say that I also love this man for his character and qualities. Those who attack him, whether from the left or right, and the manner in which they attack him for the reasons they express, are, IMHO, beneath contempt.

As Howlin has pointed out, polls continue to show that our Dubya enjoys over 90% support from Republicans, while no Dem candidate gets over 50% of the Dem electorate. That will change, of course, once they pick a candidate. Unfortunately, we on FR seem to have more than our share of the disgruntled hard-Right 9% or 10% who post here. If the election is tight, that 9% or 10% could have a genuine impact. When I think that they would risk turning this country over to the likes of any of those Dem candidates in a post 9/11 world, it makes my skin crawl. As for myself, I'm going to channel my political energy to signing up as a volunteer as soon as a Bush-Cheney HQ opens in my locality.
