Is it impossible for you to post on ONE THREAD and NOT talk about that? Is it? Great point. But you're forgetting that no matter what Bush does...
We're all doomed.

And the choice was Pickering.....he just shored up the Southern vote.
Bush is not his daddy when it comes to politics..

Why just Pickering? He wants to keep the judicial obstruction issue alive. Pickering's old, not even that conservative, no big deal. But the others we want to make sure have life appointments.

Oh, it'll get plenty of press -- the Democraps will be screaming with rage, or Kate Michelman (sp?) will have what nuts they still have (or have Left).

"Methinks they're getting a bit cocky and careless." Ohmigod! Could they have caught it from Michael?
This could be worse than SARS.

excuse me, my point was that this action was taken in direct response to the negativity garnered by his amnesty proposal. For one thing, why recess appoint Pickering NOW? Its my 2 cents and wasn't a flame against anyone. Last I heard FR still allows us to wonder about "strategeries" yes?

If I am right, this would be ripe for a brand-new ruling from the chair, to CREATE a new precedent for the future that such reappointment votes cannot be filibustered. Careful what you wish for. Just keep in mind that such a precedent would then be in place for any recess appointments that they make in the future as well.
To: SunStar
"President Bush sidesteps Congress . . . "
This is probably one of the mildest spins the press will put on this. Dan Rather will probably say something like, "In a move which some critics say undermines Congress's constitutional oversight of the president's judicial nomination powers, President Bush today appointed conservative Judge Charles Pickering to the federal appeals court. The rare recess appointment came over the objections of minority and civil rights groups, who said that Pickering is insentitive to minority concerns and threatens fundamental civil liberties." And so on . .

Ownes is the lady hopefully destined for the 5th Cir, and I believe she is from Texas. The lady from California is Janice Brown, and I believe she was nominated for the 9th. I think that both of these ladies will make great judges. Let's hope that will now come in, through recess appointments or finally and up and down vote in the senate. It's a shame about Estrada, though.
To: DocCincy
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the president is doing this, and wish he would do the same with the other nominees that have been unfairly held hostage by the Democrats, but I wonder if this is his way of throwing some red meat to conservatives after his immigration proposal didn't go over so well?
To: gov_bean_ counter
Timing is for maximum political benefit. Think so? Appointing someone accused of being racist right before MLK Day?
I'm not sure what the thinking there was.
