Immigration could kill him.

How is that, exactly?

--------------

Howard Dean on Bush Plan:

"We need earned legalization for undocumented immigrants in the US who work hard, pay taxes, and otherwise obey the rules, so that they can become full participants in society, including becoming citizens. We also need a temporary worker program that responds to US labor demands but ensures US workers are not displaced, and that offers family unification, the right to organize, and a clear path to citizenship."

--------------

Wesley Clark on Bush Plan:

Clark On Immigration Reform: "Too Little, Too Late"

"During the last election, President Bush promised to work with President Vicente Fox and our allies to meaningfully reform our immigration system. That's one of many promises he hasn't kept. Once again, the White House is talking about immigration reform, but they're not doing enough about it. The Bush proposal is too little, too late. It shouldn't take an election to get President Bush to focus on immigration reform.

"Today, the Bush White House proposed an immigration reform program that fails to help the immigrants who contribute to their communities every day, that fails to fix backlogs in the current system, and that fails to focus law enforcement resources on improving border security. It is wrong to leave foreign workers trapped in a temporary worker program.

"Real reform must be based on the core principles of economic security, access to legalization, family reunification, and homeland security. We should allow hard-working, law-abiding, undocumented workers to eventually earn their citizenship.

Immigration could kill him.

The only thing that could hurt him will be jobs. The radical left winger, George Will, this weekend, in a discussion of jobs, lampooned the idea of jobs being a "lagging indicator" by pointing out that we are in the 25th month of recovery to get out of a recession that was 8 months long. Jobs had better pick up. Even the lack of jobs has nothing to do with Bush's policies, he will ge stuck with any bad news.

Newsweek polls: Always add 5 to the Republican.
Good rule. Here's rule #2:
Elections: Always add 5 points to the Democrat because of dead people who vote, illegal aliens who vote, and people who vote 10 or 20 times.

Immigration could kill him.

Except... where are those people going to go? There's no viable Perot for 2004. I suppose his conservative base could fail to turn out in high numbers... but it seems unlikely.

I'm a conservative and Bush lost my vote months ago. I've
considered voting for the Constitution party candidate.

What does Joe Liberman say?

He scare me.

Would be a blessing if Dean or Clark win their party's nomination.

"Priciple".... votes are will allow us to stand tall with our heads high. If only ALL of us who are upset with GW would vote principle, all would be well. However in the real world, a vote for the Constitution Party or the Libertarian Party is a vote for the Democrat nominee. As poor as GW is on some issues, he is far and away preferrable to any leftist assuming the Presidency.

COMPARATIVE DATA

NEWSWEEK POLL 1/8-9/04
sampling: ADULTS
[. . . results always on the low side relative to other polls; NEVER publishes its topline stats so we can't determine how they weight their polling data. That said, Newsweek's polling results both TIE their 'post-Saddam bump' poll in December and EXCEED all other poll results since August.]

RASMUSSEN/SCOTT POLL 1/9-11/04 -- MOST RECENT OF THE POLLS
sampling: LIKELY VOTERS

GWB job approval: 57% (poll at beginning of January had job approval at 55%)
[89% of Republicans/50% of Independents/31% of Democrats
60% in red states/53% in blue states]

FOX NEWS/OPINION DYNAMICS POLL 1/7-8/04
sampling: REGISTERED VOTERS

GWB job approval: 58% (highest rating since early September)
[86% of Republicans (same as last month)/57% of Independents/29% of Democrats]

GWB likability: 63% like 21% dislike (+42)

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,107941,00.html

AP/IPSOS-REID POLL 1/5-7/04
sampling: REGISTERED VOTERS

GWB job approval: 56%
[other than post-Saddam bump poll, highest rating since August]

UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA ANNENBERG POLL 12/16/03-1/5/04
[interviewed 3,243 adults // boasts smallest margin of error of ALL polls cited here at +/- 2]

GWB job approval: 63%

CONTEXT: At this point in his presidency, Bill Clinton had a Gallup job approval rating of 42% (vs GWB's 60%)!

You are right. Sad but true... Part of me thinks that we would be better off with a Democrat in the White House. When Clinton was president, we actually had a surplus. Congress kept the pursestrings tight. Now we've got Pubbies in charge of both the legislative and executive branches and spending is out of control. Bush seems to think he can abandon his conservative base and still win. Sadly enough, he's probably right.
