Schwarzenegger – playing chess with the budget 11.01.2004 "An opening move in the fiscal chess game" – that is how one journalist is describing Governer Arnold Schwarzenegger's recently announced budget plans for California's ailing economy. The analogy to chess is not accidental – the action star is known to be a chess enthusiast.

The above article is quoted in full on the Free Republic forum, a web portal that describes itself as an "online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!"

Hoo-yah indeed! In the forum discussion of the Walters article we see hotlinks to pictures from the ChessBase news pages. This is understandable, since a Google search for "Schwarzenegger – chess" which brings two ChessBase pictorials to the top.

Expect a lot of news mentions of FR in the coming weeks and months. Free Republic is aledgedly involved in a huge scandal. George Bush, the GOP, Fresno City Hall, and now the Gubinator are secretly funnelling money to the powerhouse conservative Republican organization, Free Republic, so we can use our mighty FReeper power to steamroll over the Democrats in November. I read it on the Internet. Gotta be true. Huge scandal breaking hard! Developing....

Do you have enough coffee cups to give the Mayor, the Gov, and the Prez and everyone else, when they all become monthly donors?

Nope. Guess we'll have to do a little more bribing, er, I mean bartering with the Chinese and see if they'll build another Mug factory. Orders are going through the roof! And it's raining here.

DU would only play if we could come up with a gender balanced/neutral board, and referred to the pieces as other than light/dark/black/white.

Seems like it would be way too easy to cheat in online chess.

True, but *we* certainly wouldn't cheat, and I think we probably have the ability to field the caliber of players that would not be beaten by computers.

At any event, we could play closed games and make a point of keeping all the pawns on the board to make things as difficult as possible for cheaters.

Just a thought. . .

I received a coffee mug but the check must have gotten lost in the mail. Please send another. I need to buy fuel for my steamroller. Thanks.
