Real Message of The Bush Amnesty [Buchanan]
American Conservative ^ | 1/9/04 | Pat Buchanan

Posted on 01/09/2004 4:44:29 PM PST by freedom44

If George Bush’s amnesty for between 8 million and 14 million illegal aliens is enacted, you can kiss the old America goodbye.

Consider what the president is saying with his amnesty. He is telling us that he cannot or will not do his constitutional duty to defend the states from invasion. He is saying that he simply cannot or will not protect our borders or enforce our immigration laws. He is saying he will no longer send illegal aliens back.

Not long ago, this would have produced calls for impeachment and cries that, “If Bush won’t enforce our laws, let’s elect a president who will.”

By offering amnesty and residency to millions who broke in line, broke our laws and broke into our country, Bush is not only rewarding wholesale criminality, he proposes to legalize it.

His amnesty will send this message to the world: the candy store is open, and the Americans cannot protect it. Now is the time to bust in.

As there must be billions of people willing to come and work for a fraction of our minimum wage—and exploit our social safety net—the number who could come under the Bush guest-worker program is almost infinite.

Imagine a car wash that employs 40 African-American, Latino, and white working-class folks at $8 an hour each. A new car wash down the street opens up, offering 40 new jobs at $5.15 an hour. No Americans apply. Under Bush’s proposal, that employer would be free to go to Asia, Africa, and Latin America, round up workers, and bring them in.

The new car wash with its foreign workers then drives the old car wash with its American workers out of business. Taxpayers are then forced to subsidize the newly unemployed—and pay for the medical care, food stamps, rent supplements, welfare, and schooling of all the new immigrants and their families, provide legal services when they get in trouble and pay for more cops to police their neighborhoods.

And every child born of a guest worker would, under our 14th Amendment, become an American citizen, automatically entitled to all the benefits of citizenship. Meanwhile, Bush’s amnesty will do nothing to halt the illegal invasion that continues to this hour. If you would know what America’s social, cultural, and fiscal future will look like, take a ride through Los Angeles, capital of Mexifornia.

But why did President Bush pick now to propose as explosive an idea as amnesty, when it seemed he was holding a winning hand on the issues of taxes, national security, the economy, and gay marriages?

One sees here the cynical ploy of “Boy Genius” Karl Rove. With the filing deadlines for the Republican primaries having passed and no GOP opponent, with no Third Party challenger from the Right, and with Dean the likely Democratic nominee, Rove knows conservatives are boxed in. In the old cliché, “The conservatives have nowhere else to go.”

So Rove is executing an “apertura a sinistra,” an opening to the Left, pandering to Hispanics and Mexican President Vicente Fox, to whom Bush is to pay a visit.

But Rove may be too clever for the president’s good. For there is no hard evidence that Hispanics, other than those militants who detest Republicans, are demanding amnesty. And with Bush’s spending on foreign aid soaring, his deficits rising, and the White House refusing to veto a single spending bill, Rove & Co. may have stretched conservative loyalty to the breaking point.

For some conservatives, this amnesty will snap it. They may just get on their hind legs and fight, for huge majorities have repeatedly registered opposition to any amnesty for illegal aliens. How is the president helped by a bloody battle with his political base in an election year?

Half a century ago, Dwight Eisenhower, informed there were a million illegals in the United States, most of them from Mexico, ordered them sent back. The project was called “Operation Wetback.”

Ike was a strong president. But in George W. Bush, we have a leader unwilling to pay the political price of doing his duty and enforcing the immigration laws of his country because he fears the reaction from the media elite and Mexican-Americans.

When it comes to standing up to truly powerful ethnic lobbies—the Hispanic Lobby, the Cuban-American Lobby, the Israeli Lobby—Bush wilts and folds every time. Nor is it a healthy sign for the future of our republic when its president offers an amnesty to law-breakers, rather than doing his painful duty to protect his country from what has now become an unstoppable foreign invasion.

The real threats to America’s survival do not come from the Sunni Triangle. They come from within, and unfortunately we have a president who either does not understand them or will not look them in the face.

Hey Pat is called pandering with a Rove-ing eye. Pat you always told the truth for America's best interest. I'm glad you are not running again. You don't understand how to pander and why you only got .5% of the vote. Those lobbies are the 3rd rail of politics. They own Washington and the media [well add the corporate internationalists too]. Why do you think you always get smeared? You'll never learn. Thank God.

In his first term, Bush II has:

1) enacted the largest expansion of entitlements since LBJ

2) seen non-security discretionary spending explode at a level much faster than Clinton

3) created an historically high deficit

4) trounced civil liberties with his "Patriot Act"

5) proposed this outrageous demographic disaster of an immigration bill

6) responsed limply to the Michigan affirmative action case

So...why should I vote for him again? If he thinks I have no where else to go on election night, he is dead wrong. I'd rather be attacked from the front by a liberal than stabbed in the back by a RINO

Don't worry, Americans will apply, because they have no place else to go. But don't be surprised if those Americans who used to earn $8 an hour and are now earning $5.15 an hour decide to vote Democrat.

I honestly think this is some sort of diversion tactic. I don't (CAN'T) Think "W" is serious about any of this.

Right?

Buchanan is correct on the immigration issue. Rove may feel conservatives will lump it but it seems to be very risky to alienate so many in his party. I wont vote for Bush if this continues without major revisions to his proposal.

Bush was handed a faltering economy on a downturn; he was gifted less than eight months into his Presidency - after a bruising and unprecedented election nightmare - with the survival of our Country on September 11.

Every aspect of that survival has required huge expenditures. . .it is a new world out there and the war on terror is not inexpensive one and there is no end in sight to this war and how it impacts the rest of our economic lives.

I believe Bush is implenting everything possible for us to address this; as well as offering along with the latest Mars photos, an updated vision for the future; something bright and positive for our nation to focus on; something other than the color of terror alerts. This should help employment while creating a new marketplace as well. It might even re-invigorate a healthy philosophy of Education.

That said. . .I am constantly amazed - if only at the hypocrisy of those who cry the loudest at the 'threats' of the Patriot Act.

So you don't like it. How do you feel about the Left's/Liberal's/Democrat's dictates on how to live, speak, think and feel on their level playing field of mediocrity?

Why is the mind control of political-correctness okay for so many; but the Patriot Act, designed out of at least a need for security is not.

There are a thousand new laws on the books that the Libs have proscribed so as to dictate 'how' we live. Whether prohibitions or newly proscribed behaviors, these new legalities and the mind-set they represent, are far more threatening to our freedom and well-being than any freedom we sacrifice because of the Patriot Act; which at least, was designed with the hope that we may, in fact, have a future.

Why don't you worry first; and and try to change, first; the anti-freedom slippery slope created for us by the Democrats; work to change the now politically-correct model of Education that has been eroding the hearts and the minds of our children and therefore America's future.

Perhaps, after we solve that very real problem of our dissolving Rights, we can move on to worrying about the impact on our rights by way of the Patriot Act.

As for Bush's immigration initiative; there are NO easy answers; and this one certainly is not.

But think it will solve more problems re immigration than it will create; and in a better ratio, long-term, than any other solution one might come up with.

"Every aspect of that survival has required huge expenditures. . .it is a new world out there and the war on terror is not inexpensive one "

As I noted, NON-SECURITY discretionary spending is out of control. Pork and social programs are growing much faster than under Clinton. When you tack on the security spending, you get historic deficits. But the increased 9/11 security needs are not fueling the other spending. And amid all of this irresponsibility, Bush hasn't found the opportunity to veto a SINGLE bill (much less abolish a single program)

"This should help employment while creating a new marketplace as well. It might even re-invigorate a healthy philosophy of Education."

Government spending and government programs do not create jobs and industries...private individuals with innovative ideas do. Your thinking here is what animates big government liberalism

"Why don't you worry first; and and try to change, first; the anti-freedom slippery slope created for us by the Democrats;"

I've dedicated my adult life to this struggle....and I expected that Bush would be in the trenches with me rather than adding to the problem.

"As for Bush's immigration initiative; there are NO easy answers; and this one certainly is not."

I have an easy answer: ENFORCE THE LAW!! Bush took an oath to protect and defend the constitution, which includes enforcing the letter of our immigration laws. Begin deportation and militarize the border. A clear majority of Americans want this, but he is afraid of the libs in the media.

As Pat said, "It's unstoppable". So, maybe Bush is simply trying to get a handle on it. We've got to find out "who" is coming across that border. Because some of the "who" may look Hispanic but, in fact, they are Arab. Maybe Bush thinks this way at least we'll have some kind of paper trail. We can't stop this invasion. Our constitution won't allow it.

"Begin deportation."

OK, here's your homework assignment:

Detail to me how the U.S. Government would go about locating, identifying, arresting, and deporting a number of people roughly equal to the total population of Michigan, who are intricately woven into our society, and spread out all over the nation, without violating every human, civil, and constitutional right known to man.

And most important, how we identify them without subjecting American citizens who simply look Mexican, to unconstitutional unreasonable searches and seizures?

Actually the problem is solved fairly easily. You don't go after the illegals you go after businesses that hire them. After a few CEOs go to jail and a few companies get shut down, nobody will be hiring illegals except for a few fly by night operations.

Ii don't have to detail it for you...it has been done before. During the Eisenhower administration (before the curse of "multiculturalism" descended on the land) Ike launched "Operation wetback" and deported a couple of million illegals. There ought to be a few holdovers from his administration around who could jog peoples' memories on the how's and where's.

"You don't go after the illegals you go after businesses that hire them."

I was in California a few months ago, touring a tomato packing plant in Stanislaus County. The entire work force appeared to be Mexicans...they were all U.S. citizens, or at least, they had papers proving that they were.

If in fact, some were not citizens and were using falsified identification, the employer who complied with the I-9 requirements is not liable foir any wrongdoing.

Here's the crux...if the INS walks in to my work place, and demands that I present them with some sort of proof of my citizenship simply because I may look Mexican to them, they are violating my constitutional rights against unreasonable search and seizure.

Not only that, but who would get to decide what "looking Mexican" actually is?

Penalizing employers is a start, but it's also a difficult road to travel, as most illegal immigrants work in small companies.

I bet a lot of white people who don't like those Mexicans would suddenly turn anti-profiling if they were thought to be Mexicans. Whoops! Did I say that?
