When comparing Howard Dean to George McGovern, Walter Mondale, and Michael Dukakis, people forget that Dukakis actually made a respectable showing in 1988. In spite of an abysmal record as Massachusetts Governor and an incompetent campaign, Dukakis won 46% of the vote against George Bush, Sr., and while the electoral vote was 426-112, Bush's margins in several states (California, Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico, Pennsylvania & Vermont) was very small.

I agree. Dukakis lost pretty handidly, but it was a far cry from the sledgehammer the dems recieved in 72' or 84'.
