I had that at work one time- a nasty, burning plastic smell, then the monitor actually started smoking! Be careful.

All of this computer equipment works with smoke and mirrors...

What happens, is that when a leak develops the smoke leaks out, the darn thing fails. Any service guy will confirm this. It happens a lot.

My wife had a monitor emit a little mushroom cloud once... While she was in the middle of Turbo Tax! It's a tribute to her skill with a computer that she was able to back out of the program and close Windows blind without losing a thing.
