The last eruption was 640,000 years ago making the next one long overdue.

Scientists make these guesstimates all the time. There's no way for sure to know when Yellowstone may erupt and there's no exact time when the last eruption occurred. It could be another 10,000 - 40,000 years ago before Yellowstone blows it lid.

By the time it blows we'd be long gone. So who cares and let's crack open some beers!!

Yes, a LOT of guessing is no doubt involved.

Nevertheless, IF they have examined the geologic record accurately about the relative timing of 29 eruptions over the last 10's of thousands of years, it is the best predictor we have, actuarially.
