High salt concentrations put osmotic pressure on the bacterial cells. It sucks the water out of the bacteria leaving them in a dead or weakened state. Those that don't die, are quickly destroyed by the immune system. Ah, excellent answer- just what I was looking for.
Why is it so hard to replicate this effect with warm water and salt? Improper concentrations? Wrong kind of salt?

I got second degree burns from coffee during an airplane flight. I was in the middle row (six seats), talking to my friend, and the stewardess put the coffee down on my tray without notifying me, and it simply slid off the tray and spilled in my lap. I was in agony, and we went to the hospital as soon as the plane landed. I was diagnosed with second degree burns and it took a while to heal although eventually it did. I did sue the airline but only for a few thousand. It was really negligence on the part of the stewardess and in addition, she was very surly with me, when I insisted on medical attention. I'm not sure about 3rd degree burns, but one could get second degree burns easily.
