It is not that seminal, but it is informative.
You are on the right track, but it is not a religious war.
The danger from the beginning is how far are the socialists willing to support the Islamists in their war on capitalistic republics such as ours. That was the underlying pre-war debate leading up to our invasion of Iraq.
The Gramscians in Europe, the US and Latin America, treated the Islamist movement in the Middle East (and Africa) as a proxy war with the Anglo-American hegemony. Even though they suffered terror attacks as a result, they have strongly supported politically, diplomatically and financially the anti-Semetic and anti-Americanism this article refers to. This ditty little secret is now beginning to be told (Arab Intifada Is European Proxy War On America) and there are an increasing number of doubts on the left how this might play out. Many are starting to realize this is a lose-lose in the heightened conflict since there seems to be little daylight for a rise by communism/socialism in this winner-take-all struggle.
Bush won't let the socialists wedge-in and the Islamists have as much hatred for the kufr commies as they do for the capitalists.
