Ok then how about border patrol or deputizing and giving the willing citizens proper training. Well it sounds like a good idea, but we would need a lot of deputies and trained citizens to effectively patrol and safeguard our borders, and the cost would be enormous. However, if we are for smaller government we can't demand results that will require much more government.

I am not certain on that point, but it certainly is worth looking in to.

However, if we are for smaller government we can't demand results that will require much more government. If it saves more money in the long run, then in effect it is downsizing the government.....we would have more border patrol, but we would have MUCH less social workers, welfare clerks, and welfare hospital workers.

it depends on what we want done. Small as in fewer functions or small as in a desk and a chair with a big welcome sign?
Seriously, Protecting the borders IS the job of a national government. We may be able to use tech to make the job less expensive. Whatever is done has to have enforcement. Scanning the hands and iris' of all picked up illegally and putting them on the block lists for legal entry.
