Immigration Reform on Bush Agenda
Washington Post ^ | December 24, 2003 | Mike Allen

< SNIP >

Lobbyists working with the White House said Bush is developing a plan that would allow immigrants to cross the border legally if jobs are waiting for them. The sources said the administration also wants to provide a way for some undocumented workers in the United States to move toward legal status.

Bush will try to make the plan more palatable to conservatives by including stricter entry controls, including increased use of technology at the border and steps toward better enforcement of current visa restrictions and reporting requirements, sources said.

The White House plan is being designed by Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove, in consultation with the domestic policy staff. Sources said the White House's biggest concern is that the new mechanism not penalize people who had followed the law and reward those who had not. McCain's plan, which was introduced in the House by Reps. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), tries to mitigate that problem by creating a new type of visa for previously undocumented workers who would be allowed to live in the United States legally for three years. Then the workers could apply for the temporary worker visa, which would be the path to a green card, or legal permanent residency. That would amount to a three-year advantage for those who entered legally.

"Making the statement that breaking the law is breaking the law is NOT THE SAME as saying all crimes are EQUAL."

Oh I'm sorry, I was unaware you are SLOW.

Ouch! Perhaps you can have some patience for those of us who can't keep up as you attempt to articulate your position.

You are one of the characters here that attempts to draw a parallel between an American citizen driving a few miles an hour over the speed limit and a foreign invader whose list of offenses BEGINS with violating immigration laws.

Whose "LIST" of offenses "BEGINS" with violating immigration laws?????
You are "one of the characters here" who wants to invent all sorts of accusations to paint every illegal immigrant as worse than any natural born American in every way....which cannot possibly comes from any personal knowledge, but rather personal bigotry.

This moronic statement IS an attempt (by you and others) to say that these two acts are EQUAL. Absurd

It WOULD be moronic.... if anybody said it.
But they didn't.
This is just about your desperate attempt to assign those positions you feel most comfortable attacking to those who disagree with you.

NOBODY said that speeding and overstaying your visa were EQUAL and the same, anymore than that we would EQUATE shop-lifting with jay-walking.

Rather we have been addressing these hypocritical legalistic puritans who pretend that the person who's violated the simplest immigration law deserves to be banished from our shores, while we know far worse criminals are home grown.

In any case, if you can't comprehend the concept that that not all illegal acts are EQUAL in gravity and consequence, then I don't know what to say to you.

You actually think mass murder is EQUAL to illegal parking?

Jorge: You should be locked up if you ever exceeded the speed limit. Hypocrite.

What was that disconnected, discombobulated collection of quotes supposed to prove?

How does it support your claim that I believe the absurd notion that all crimes are EQUAL?
Please explain.

LOL.
Disconnected? You poor thing.

Jorge: "How does it support your claim that I believe the absurd notion that all crimes are EQUAL?"

Just when did I say such a thing? Oh you mean this comment.
moehoward: "You are one of the characters here that attempts to draw a parallel between an American citizen driving a few miles an hour over the speed limit and a foreign invader whose list of offenses BEGINS with violating immigration laws.
This moronic statement IS an attempt (by you and others) to say that these two acts are EQUAL. Absurd."

You then denied making such comparisons.

My post #502 simply shows you in fact did make such a comparison.

A "disconnected, discombobulated collection", hardly.Your words, in direct response to another.

How does this program increase the security of the US?

Everyone is talking about illegals from Mexico alone.

What message does this send to other nation with a desire to influence US politics or penetrate US borders?

Only 19 needed to take out WTC, Pentagon.

Where will the resources come from to do background checks on 8 million people?

"When U.S. immigration officials were tasked with the responsibility of checking immigrants coming into the United States from the Middle East after September 11, it tied up all of INS' resources and caused significant delays," Mr. Cutler said.

"When this country had problems trying to properly identify a few thousand people, how is it going to do the same with a few million?"
