Immigration Reform on Bush Agenda
Washington Post ^ | December 24, 2003 | Mike Allen

< SNIP >

Lobbyists working with the White House said Bush is developing a plan that would allow immigrants to cross the border legally if jobs are waiting for them. The sources said the administration also wants to provide a way for some undocumented workers in the United States to move toward legal status.

Bush will try to make the plan more palatable to conservatives by including stricter entry controls, including increased use of technology at the border and steps toward better enforcement of current visa restrictions and reporting requirements, sources said.

< SNIP >

The White House plan is being designed by Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove, in consultation with the domestic policy staff. Sources said the White House's biggest concern is that the new mechanism not penalize people who had followed the law and reward those who had not. McCain's plan, which was introduced in the House by Reps. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), tries to mitigate that problem by creating a new type of visa for previously undocumented workers who would be allowed to live in the United States legally for three years. Then the workers could apply for the temporary worker visa, which would be the path to a green card, or legal permanent residency. That would amount to a three-year advantage for those who entered legally.

I am going to defer judgment until more details are released, by the White House, not by the left-wing media seeking to portray Bush in the worst light to his base. I am not against a temporary guest-worker program provided it is not parlayed into legal citizenship- as if they can cut in line ahead of those who waited patiently for legal admission into this country.

What is so awful about that?

They're criminals - they should be jailed and then deported.

Show me something... anything that says this amnesty proposal is for hispanics and Mexicans only.

read the article. Bush is talking to Fox. It even quotes "family values don't stop at the Rio Grande". Is there another country that borders the US with the Rio Grande other than Mexico?

I would rather they continue to be hardworking, contributing members of US society....you prefer we pay taxes to persecute them. How foolish.

Fortunately those with your draconian attitude will never be in a position of influence in this country.

I don't support welfare checks for illegals. >>>>>>>

Who does, but we're 'birthing' hundreds of 'anchor babies' DAILY, who will recieve their welfare check (for 18 yrs.) regardless of their parents imm. status.

I say give them a chance. >>>>>>>>

Sorry, seven 'new deadlines' to get legal since 1986, seems like enough 'chances' to me.

What is so awful about that?>>>>>>>>>

What would be 'so awful' with mexico creating a TAX BASE to support herself & her countrymen, just as the USA has done.

You mean the illegal aliens who are burdening our health care system, school systems... - the ones who work off the books and don't pay any taxes, the criminals who use forged documents and engage in identity theft - those upstanding individuals?

Any suggestions for the 25% (illegals) who are contributing to the US JAIL population ??? and these are for 'other than immigration crimes'.

I do not hate illegals. I hate their behavior.

I will continue to support illegals with my tax dollars. If I hated illegals, I would act against them. I never have, and do not intend to. Americans do not "rat" as a rule.

But illegal groups have to give average Am citizens a break. There is only so much abuse we can take.

By the way, I have acquaintances that are illegals, and I have personally helped them in various ways. Generous ways. And they are good people. Unfortunately, it's not that simple, though. We have major problems, and it is not just to have the Am middle class shoulder the burden.

He has a point, all of those illegal Australians and Italians and Greeks are the real reason for the amnesty.

Right. No sarcasm intended I'm sure....

Again, lets try, What part of 'illegal' immigration don't you understand?

Are you saying that we should blindly welcome undocumented immigrants from Mexico, and no other country?

Reward criminals! Disgusting.

You don't think technology can replace the slave labor picking lettuce?

What happened after slavery ended..'the cotton gin'.

Go back to Mexico!
