It's interesting to see how people react differently to earthquakes. I was living in Pasadena when the Northridge quake hit in '94. Sure it woke me up, but I went into work, figuring it was the CA equivalent of a bad snowstorm back in Michigan.

Well, it was just me and 3 others working that day - everyone else was freaked out!

This is just another reminder to check the status of my quake kit. I'm sure there are things in there that are due to be replaced, like batteries and some of the "long-term-storage" food items.

All the rest of you freepers have quake kits? I would highly recommend getting / making one, after seeing how people close to the Northridge epicenter had to live for a month.

Earthquake

Is this the Jews "fault"?

Just kidding!!!!!

I thought the play on words was harmless, but..............they (we) get blamed for mostly everything.

Clock tower collapse in Paso Robles.
Severe damage on Highway 46 (east-west route from Cambria to Paso Robles), minor damage on other roads.

That has got to be creepy

Not really, and I say that humbly as a Ca. native. You just remain calm because you have absolutely no control. There's nothing more humbling than losing your balance and being tossed the floor due to mother nature. My reference to that is the Whittier Narrows quake in 1987 and I was living in Pasadena. LOL about that to this day.

Wow, that was the hospital I was born in.

Hope everyone is safe out there.

As long as the aftershocks are less than a 5.0, there shouldn't be much new damage. But weakened buildings, roadways, etc., would be good to avoid.

Yep, and so far so good. 8 more since the 4.6 -- 3.3, 3.3, 3.7, 3.9, 4.0, 3.0, 2.5, 3.7

Steady stream of relatively light aftershocks are a good sign that maybe there won't be a major aftershock. We can keep our fingers crossed.

I've been in there. It did look as though Hearst expected somebody was coming after him with a howitzer.

Sadly, Welles had to leave the "Howitzer attack sequence" of Citizen Kane on the cutting room floor due to time considerations.

I want the sled. Does anyone possibly have a picture of the original "Rosebud" from the movie "Citizen Kane"?

Reports of injuries at a winery in San Luis Obispo - apparently the large oak wine barrels fell on people when they came loose with the shaking. Send prayers out on that one....

There are fault lines everywhere.

The exception is that California has earthquake building codes.

You will have an EQ in Iowa. It's just a matter of time.

Yes, and there have been in the past. I think the nearest (big) fault in the madrid. Last time that really popped it is said the Missippi River changed course.

That said, I'll take the (much, much, much more often than not) stable ground and chilly winters.

There are the ocassional tornados of course.

At Christmas in 1989, after the Loma Prieta quake, I made up packs for each of my folks' cars. Tooth brush/paste, bottled water, 1st aid kit, canned nuts, candy bars, space blankets, deck of cards, flashlight, toilet paper, transistor radio, plus a lot of other stuff.

As they went through all the stuff they looked like a kid getting a pony. With all the traveling they did to and from Tahoe, it suddenly dawned on them how vulnerable they were.

Then, sure enough, they got stuck in the Sierras in a blizzard and had to spend the night in their car on the highway. They REALLY enjoyed wrapping up in the blankets, eating the peanuts and playin gin rummy by flashlight!!
