Failed former president Jimmy "Malaise" Carter says the appointment of popular Georgia Democrat Zell Miller to the U.S. Senate was a mistake because his fellow ex-governor "betrayed all the basic principles that I thought he and I and others shared." "The comments, which Carter made Wednesday on the radio program FOX News Live with Alan Colmes, are the latest criticism from prominent Democrats of the maverick senator who has endorsed President Bush's re-election and penned a new book arguing his party is out of touch with the South," the Associated Press reported today.
Questioned by Colmes, Carter said, "I would rather not even comment about Zell Miller on the radio," but then called the appointment "one of the worst mistakes" then-Gov. Roy Barnes, another Democrat, made in his final four years in office.
Miller, sounding more like an abuse-absorbing Republican than the lifelong Democrat he is, today dismissed Carter's comments and called him a friend of more than four decades.
"And over those 40-plus years, I bet I've received about two dozen personal notes from Jimmy Carter," Miller said. "Half of them are giving me hell, and the other half are bragging on me. So, I figure I'm doing OK batting .500 with Jimmy Carter."
Carter will likely have more to complain about next year, when Republicans are heavily favored to pick up the seat after Miller retires.

Have to agree with Jimmy on this one. Zell certainly does not sure the basic hatred of American principles like Carter.

I'd consider it a compliment.
Jimmy Carter has betrayed America, but worse then that he has betrayed the God he claims to serve.
To: kattracks
I think the betrayal is the other way around. Jimmy Carter has abandoned his Georgia roots and has joined the left wing lemmings in their rush to socialism.

Jimmy Carter was a mistake. I never did figure what Carter was trying to do as president other than inadvertently wreck the nation. Carter didn't have any vision. He thought the USA should have kissed up the the USSR. By that he gave more credibility to that feudal system than it deserved. By laboring to coexist, communism held on a few more years. Carter probably sheds a tear evertime he sees the modern map of Europe and Asia.

The diplomatic failures of the Carter Administration are legion (USSR, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Central America), and his only success is founded in the willingness of Anwar Sadat to make peace with Israel.
Fast forward nearly a quarter-century and Zell Miller supports the administration actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which have met with Jimmy's disapproval. The years may pass, but Jimmy Carter's ability to miss the essence of historic moments has not changed.

I think the proper nickname for Jimmy Cahtah is "Misery Index". If not, it oughta be.

I used to think Carter was well-meaning but inept and wrong.
I am not sure now. I think he may turn out to have been something far worse.
As a practical matter, it doesn't make any difference whether harm is done through malevolence or ineptitude.
The only good thing that came from Carter's misrule was Reagan.

Jimmy Peanut betrayed America by acting like a conservative during the campaign, but governing like a socialist (90% tax rates).

Everything Carter attempted as President ended in utter failure. He failed to end the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan, he failed keep the economy running, he failed to bring about Mid East peace (the thing with Sedat was nothing more than Sedat realize he had been thoroughly beaten by Israel), and he failed to defend America. When he looks at the world today, the only thing he can see is how worng his policies were. No wonder he's senile.

To me, Carter seemed to be doing okay as an Ex-President when he was building houses, overseeing foreign elections, and writing poetry. However, he let Bill Clinton subvert him into joining in the partisan president-bashing that no former president did until Clinton left office. That is when Carter crossed over to the Dark Side.
