"The irony. Rum from Canada undercut the first Prohibition as well. So it goes. (BC Bud is good stuff, too)."
Rum from Canada may have made up some of the alcohol supply here in the US during prohibition, but what wasn't smuggled in from Canada or elswhere was cooked up in bathtubs and stills in the backwoods. Where there is demand, it will be met.
Lissen, forget Canada. Maine is your POE for cocaine. Coupla thousand miles of coast and lots of small islands. Lotsa fishing boats with little else to do. Goes from Maine down through Central and Western Mass, (Naturally) in trucks right into NYC.
Apparently no one in the DEA ever noticed colonies of Colombians settling along the route. It ain't like they're in New England for the mill jobs. Speaking of borders, Maine and Canada are wide open to each other. Came in very handy during Prohibition, but it's no way to run a country at war with terrorists.
