Simply know what rights and freedoms are worth, and have a grasp on the actual threat levels that have you quaking in your shoes and looking over your shoulder.
The Founding Principles are philosophical in nature, and apply to humans and their rights as given by the Creator simply because they live. These Principles know no bounds of time or hardship.
The Constitution prevailed through a number of "real wars". Why do you image that threats should have more impact on those principles than actual warfare. (Which you so obviously haven't experienced.)
Yes, a lot of Americans died when the Twin Towers were attacked. Many died at Pearle Harbor, but no one spoke of suspending the Constitution as a result of that attack. The only difference between now in then is that young people of today have no idea what the reall differences are between this Nation and all the others: Life under the Constitution.
