VIDEO: House Republicans Speak to the Media After Leaving the Floor Today (8-1-08)

$10 Gas Doesn't Change Dem Senator's Mind on Oil Drilling (brilliant set up by McConnell)

POLITICO: "Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices. Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess. . . . Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers. 'You're not covering this, are you?' complained one senior Democratic aide."

Pelosi Cuts Lights, Mikes In Oil Debate

August 1st, 2008

From the Politico:

House Dems turn out the lights but GOP keeps talking

August 01, 2008

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi’s refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.

At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on, and the microphones have been turned on as well.

But C-SPAN, which has no control over the cameras in the chamber, has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one is witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left.

Only about a half-dozen Republicans were on the floor when this began, but the crowd has grown to about 20 now, according to Patrick O’Connor.

“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”

Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.

“You’re not covering this, are you?” complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor.

Update - The Capitol Police are now trying to kick reporters out of the press gallery above the floor, meaning we can’t watch the Republicans anymore. But Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is now in the gallery talking to reporters, so the cops have held off for a minute. Clearly, Democrats don’t want Republicans getting any press for this episode. GOP leaders are trying to find other Republicans to rotate in for Blunt so reporters aren’t kicked out.

Update 2 - This message was sent out by Blunt’s office:

“Although, this Democrat Majority just Adjourned for the Democrat 5-Week Vacation, House Republicans are continuing to fight on the House Floor. Although the lights, mics and C-SPAN camera’s have been turned off, House Republicans are on the Floor speaking to the tax payers in the gallery who, not surprisingly, agree with Republican Energy proposals.

All Republicans who are in town are encouraged to come to the House Floor.”

Update 3 - Democrats just turned out the lights again. Republicans cheered.

Update 4 - Republican leaders just sent out a notice looking for a bullhorn and leadership aides are trying to corral all the members who are still in town to come speak on the floor and sustain this one-sided debate.

Also, Republicans can thank Shadegg for turning on the microphones the first time. Apparently, the fiesty Arizona conservative started typing random codes into the chamber’s public address system and accidentally typed the correct code, allowing Republicans brief access to the microphone before it was turned off again.

“I love this,” Shadegg told reporters up in the press gallery afterward. “Congress can be so boring…This is a kick.”

You don’t expect the Democrats to cut into their five week vacation do you?

What a circus.

What a disgrace the Democrat Party is to this country.

18 Comments »  "It is unfortunate that Republicans weren’t this feisty in the past when they gave us Prescription Medicare Drugs, etc. Maybe the Republicans would still be in charge of the lights, camera, action."

Pelosi - Keep It Up Baby - You will hit zero percentage favorable standing!!! Another first to shoot for SanFranGranNan - Go For It Baby. . .

It's shocking that a mainstream candidate, with so many supposedly well-regarded economists advising him, would produce such a shoddy, poorly thought-out plan.

“But the reality is that as Obama and his equally unknowing friends push windfall taxes, Exxon Mobil has already given the U.S. a massive windfall. As economist Mark Perry has noted, Exxon Mobil will pay more taxes this year to the U.S. Treasury than the bottom 50% of all taxpayers — combined.

In the first half, Exxon Mobil’s after-tax income rose 15% to $22.6 billion. A lot of money, to be sure, until you consider that Exxon Mobil paid $61.7 billion in taxes — also a record”

Tapscott: GOP missed opportunity in Capitol Hill rebellion

Yesterday Republicans around the nation cheered when their beleaguered minority House caucus seized the floor and refused to leave after Speaker Nancy Pelosi adjourned the chamber without a debate on expanding domestic oil production. Pelosi ordered the lights and the cameras off, but Republicans extended their protest rally with the darkness a perfect allegory for Democratic inaction on energy. As the protest grew and media coverage expanded, Pelosi made a huge mistake in ordering Capitol Hill police to evict the Republicans from the building.

And Mark Tapscott argues that the Republicans made a mistake in complying:

A stunt? Maybe. Certainly, a little theatre. But sometimes opportunity presents itself, and if you’re a frustrated Republican (or Blue Dog Dem) who Queen Nan has decided has no right to vote, then you find a bit of stiffness in your spine and seize it.

If you were near a radio, or a ‘puter, you probably followed the out-of-usual-routine insurrection, chuckling at GOP audacity [ahem] and Don’tDrillDem whining.

But if you missed it last night, today’s front pages at LATimes, NYTimes, WaPo, SFGate, certainly wouldn’t clue you in. Relying on them, you would never know what happened. Indeed, you might not even be aware that Queen Nan and her DDD coterie had left DC for a five week paid vacation.

Remember them and think of Queen Nan sunning herself on the roof of her San Francisco mansion, cooled by the breezes off the bay, nibbling daintily on cracked crab and bemoaning the stresses of dealing with the hoi polloi …

… as you are filling up your tank with $4/gal gas and wondering how to get a good night’s sleep with your air conditioner turned off.

Deport the criminals first* [Darleen Click]

Gotta love this

DEVORE - More than two dozen illegal immigrants got an unpleasant surprise when they showed up to pay their debt to society.

Instead of doing community service, the Mexican and Guatemalan nationals ended up being handcuffed and taken into custody by federal immigration agents.

Most have been sent to their home countries or are in the process of being deported.

The 32 men arrested Saturday morning at the Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center were participating in a county work release program as an alternative to serving time in jail.

Cue the usual whining:

Immigrant-rights (sic) advocates say they are disturbed by enforcement actions that target low-risk, nonviolent offenders.

“One of the concerns with the current implementation of the agreement is they said it would be for hard-core criminals and felons,” said Emilio Amaya, executive director of the San Bernardino Community Service Center, a nonprofit that helps people going through the deportation process. “Most of the people are being detained for misdemeanors.”

Because, as we all know, illegals convicted of DUI’s never do it again and never kill anyone while under the influence. Because, as we all know, illegals selling street drugs never kill anyone.

We should just, you know, ignore all the misdemeanors until every convicted felon is caught and deported.

No, we should ignore both the misdemeanors and felons until each illegal criminal is caught and convicted. Because it is sooooo unfair that the mere petty-criminal illegal gets deported first. Unfair! Unfair!

Yeah, that’s the ticket.

TALKLEFT: "Barack Obama is having a press conference this morning and it is being dominated by questions about the 'race card.' That makes it a good press conference for McCain. The big hook for McCain is the fact that Obama supporters disgracefully smeared Bill and Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries. The McCain riposte to pushback from Obama supporters is 'that's what you said about Bill and Hillary Clinton.' . . . The fairy tale has come home to roost. All the dirty work these folks did during the primaries to slime Bill and Hillary Clinton is now fodder for John McCain." Yes, it kind of suggests that anyone who dares to oppose Obama will be called a racist.

ADVICE FOR OBAMA: "He can't use his race as a factor and disqualify it simultaneously. Pick a position and stick to it. Obviously, the better position for Obama is transcending race, and obviously, if he thinks he can dip gracefully into the subject whenever it works for him, he's wrong."

Barack Obama -- fighting to keep us ignorant

It's unfortunate that, at least until this Friday, Barack Obama opposed off-shore drilling. Still, this is a policy issue on which reasonable people probably can differ and certainly could before gasoline prices skyrocketed. But, as I set forth below, Obama has also led a one-man crusade to keep the American people ignorant about what's at stake in the debate over off-shore drilling. This, it seems to me, is almost criminal. For it implies that there is no set of facts under which we should ever consider drilling off-shore. The absurdity of that position, always apparent, is confirmed by Obama's willingness to flip on the issue.

Here's the background. In 2005, Congress considered energy legislation that included an off-shore inventory. The inventory would provide an estimate of our off-shore reserves. Taking it wouldn't mean drilling; it would just tell us what's out there. Yet Obama voted to kill the off-shore inventory provision. So, unfortunately, did John McCain. However, the effort to kill the inventory failed, and the first inventory report was issued in February 2006.

Obama, though, did not give up in his efforts to keep the public ignorant. In January 2007, he proposed legislation to eliminate the authorization to conduct the inventory, as established in the 2005 law. Obama's bill is S. 115. The key provision is section 101(a)(5). It provides that "Section 357 (42 U.S.C. 15912) (relating to comprehensive inventory of OCS oil and natural gas resources)" is "repealed as of the date of enactment of this act." It's my understanding that Obama is the only sponsor of this legislation.

Ironically, Obama called his legislation "The Oil SENSE Act." How audacious a label for an act that would deprive the public of key information relevant to deciding whether off-shore drilling makes sense. As far as I know, Obama's legislation is still pending.

It's wonderful that Obama now thinks it might be ok to drill off-shore, provided that such drilling is part of an "overarching really thoughtful" energy package. Perhaps now, as part of the package, Obama will stop opposing an inventory of our off-shore energy assets. After all, if Obama is prepared to support drilling, he no longer needs to keep voters in the dark about what we are losing by not drilling.

Pelosi is an embarrassment to the U.S.

Nancy Pelosi Grilled, Tries To Defend Her Position On Offshore Drilling, Fails

"Pelosi is a supporter of equal rights for gays and lesbians and a woman’s right to choose (abortion). She has worked to increase funding for AIDS research, education, and environmental protection, and tried to block communist China from receiving “most favored nation” trading status. She favored background checks for people purchasing handguns, and lengthened prison sentences when guns are used to commit crimes. Her largest financial supporters have been the United Auto Workers and the Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery.

Pelosi is a multi-millionaire. Mostly on the strength of her husband’s portfolio of commercial real estate, the Pelosis’ net worth is at least $25M and may be as high at $92M — financial disclosure forms for federal officials report assets and liabilities in broad ranges, so the figure is difficult to pinpoint."

Obama’s Birth Certificate and the Suppression of Free Speech (Important)

Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs has a reader named Techdude, a certified forensic computer examiner, who began an investigation into the authenticity of the document. Techdude lists as his credentials, membership in the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, American College of Forensic Examiners, The International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners, and other similar organizations. As his rigorous analysis proceeded, someone tracked down his name and address and vandalized his car and hung a mutilated rabbit from his front door in order to frighten him to cease publication of the results of his investigation, which was the evidence that the birth certificate proved to be a fraud.

Perhaps it takes a foreigner looking from the outside in to give us a clear look at the overall meaning of the mainstream media silence on the alleged John Edwards scandal. In this case it is Guy Adams writing in his US Media Diary in the UK Independent about "The 'scoop' the US papers ignored."

Here at FREE REPUBLIC, The Lights are ON!!!! Republicans Take a Stand (Live Thread II)

Drilling is a Veto Away for the Grand Oil Party

Drill for more oil (Chicago Tribune)

Vanity Flashbacks- Not a Drop of Oil for XX Years

Through the magic of Google Archives, I thought it would be fun to remind the left of how many times they said things like 'drilling won't bring us a drop of oil for xx years', xx years ago.

I am hearing everything from 5 years to now 30. The funny thing is, here in East Texas, some of the local drillers can have a new well tapped, a pump put on it, and it producing in less than six months. We see it all the time.

Daschle 2001- "Everyone knows we won't get a drop of oil out of Alaska for a decade and it won't last more than a few days,"

Letter to the Editor- 2001- "By now we should all know the obvious reasons not to drill in ANWR: that there is probably only six months worth of oil there, that we wouldn't see a drop (for several years)..."

Jim Scarantino- 2001- "Even the oil companies will tell you you are not going to get the first drop of that oil until 10 years from now."

Detroit News Editorial- 2001- "Why not revisit this issue 30 years from now, when the oil and gas will probably be even more valuable, and the drilling technology will be that much cleaner. Why the rush?..."

Newsweek- 2001- ANWR oil would not begin flowing for years ... Or as Nemtzow says, "If you want to find more oil for America, drill in Detroit.."

LA Times- 2002 "(drilling will ) reap not a drop of the 1 billion barrels of oil estimated to be (offshore for a decade) ...

Joe Lieberman- 2002- ""The fact remains that drilling in the refuge would not produce a drop of oil for a decade, far beyond the time of the current crisis, and even then far too little to change the skewed foreign oil dependency equation."

Brendan Headd Editorial - 2002- .."It will take about 10 years for the first drop of oil from Area 1002 to (hit the market).."

2002- If companies began drilling immediately, it would take at least 10 years for any crude oil to be delivered to refineries. And once the oil reaches the refineries, estimates state that there is only a six-month supply of "economically-recoverable" oil over 50 years.

"We live in the same community. We are all in this hellhole together."
California is Liberalism's petri dish, and the experiment is turning putrid. Liberal politicians (yes, including Arnold) have brought the state to financial meltdown. Criminal gangs run rampant, energy is in short supply thanks to the environmental lobby, and businesses are being chased out by stifling regulation and job-killing taxation. The state's economy would collapse without illegal immigrant workers, who are changing the face of the state.

PELOSI WILL NOT ALLOW A VOTE ON OFFSHORE DRILLING. Because she knows she'd lose. "A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken July 25-27 found that Americans by numbers approaching 2-1 would be more likely to support a candidate who backs expanded offshore drilling."

OIL DROPS below $120 a barrel.

UPDATE: Brian J. Noggle: "Congress must act now! . . . . What is important is that our ruling political class realize that unless it acts, citizens might get the impression that market forces alone can cause declining gas prices, and that sometimes the rain falls without the dances of the rainmakers on the floors of the House and Senate."

STEVE CHAPMAN on gas prices, home prices, and the economy:

Homes are not worth what they used to be, and for the Fed to attempt to disguise the fact would create even more uncertainty in a turbulent market. That, in turn, would merely postpone the day when prices hit the inevitable bottom.

When you have a loss of wealth, the best way to cope is to accept it and adapt to a lower standard of living, sooner rather than later. Sending out rebates, eliminating gas taxes, bailing out homeowners and accelerating monetary growth, among the proposed remedies, do exactly the opposite. They spare us the obligation of dealing with reality by making us feel richer so we can keep on as we were before.

But they don't change the stark fact that we are poorer now and will remain that way for some time. And they ultimately backfire by wasting money, igniting inflation or both.

In the long run, we will adapt to the new realities, the economic impact will moderate, and the pain will fade. Till then, our least destructive option is to do something no politician would dare suggest: Suck it up.

Certainly not in an election year.

AN ENERGY RIOT ON THE PLAINS:

Driving south out of the agricultural town of Ainsworth, you can’t miss its newest crop: wind turbines, three dozen of them, with steel stalks 230 feet high and petal-like blades 131 feet long, sprouting improbably from the sand hills of north-central Nebraska, beside ruminating cattle. Though painted gray, the turbines stand out against the evening backdrop of battleship-colored thunderclouds and bear an almost celestial whiteness when day’s light is right. Airplane pilots can spot them from far away, and rarely does a bird make their unfortunate acquaintance.

Nobody tell Ted Kennedy. And, yes, Riot on the Plains is my favorite Frontier Trust song. But I've been trying to work the phrase "Willa Cather Proud" into a post for ages without success . . .

ANOTHER GRIM MILESTONE: Thirty years ago Jimmy Carter established the Department of Energy. And all our energy problems were solved . . .

ARNOLD KLING ASKS AN INCONVENIENT QUESTION:

Go through a mental list of major government programs, and ask how many of them you would enact today in their current formats.

Social Security? Even if you like the concept, if you had it to do over again you would make it less susceptible to demographic imbalances.

Medicare? Agriculture policy? Energy policy?

If you step back and look at it, the problem of fragile by design that I wrote about concerning Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae is widespread in top-down solutions. And yet, like Charlie Brown getting ready to kick a football, we seem to have an infinite capacity to believe that it will be different this time. We think that the next top-down design introduced by government will work fine, it will never degrade, and we won't find ourselves ten or twenty years down the road wondering how such a mess was created.

Plus, related thoughts on the American welfare state: "Each program was designed. But together they add up to something than no one would have intended--a hodgepodge of subsidies and credits that allow some poor people to fall through the cracks and provide many subsidies to the affluent."

MICKEY KAUS: "The LAT is more like Daily Kos than it wants to admit (and vice versa): The Daily Kos has banned longtime blogger Lee Stranahan for writing calm, clear-headed posts assessing the evidence in the John Edwards scandal."

JOEL ACHENBACH: Global Warming Did It! Well, Maybe Not. "We're stuck on the notion that climate change is the culprit every time a natural disaster strikes. But that's just muddying the waters. . . . The message that needs to be communicated to these people is: 'Your problem is not global warming. Your problem is that you're nuts.'"

IN THE LONDON TIMES: Strong praise for Kathleen Parker's Save the Males. "Let’s dance. The arrival of Kathleen Parker’s book marks one of those sensational moments of seismic cultural shift that seem unthinkable, unimaginable." Our podcast interview with Parker is here.

Obama: Take Profits for Rebate Checks --While it is in keeping with his Marxist character, it astounds me that someone at his level- with access to the best advisors money can buy-- has no grasp of this simple axiom:

"Corporations pay no taxes ( or any other fee )--
they simply pass them on to their customers..."

Then again, robbing one disfavored group- to pay another, favored group-- is in keeping with his "charcter"- or lack of it...

Even my liberal Kerry-loving daughter HATES Obama and wants a ride to the polls with us in November to vote for McCain. Laughing I nearly fell out of my chair on that one.

Texas, the only poll that counts is the one of votes on election day- everything else is white noise.

The Media Hive uses polls to make stories, drive agendas, and attempt to shape opinion- they will run a poll, write stories about the poll, then run another poll about the story and the first poll- it's a feedback loop.

While I can't discount The New, Improved Black Jesus winning ( remember Bill Clinton vs. The Forgotten Bush's 90% approval rate? ) what I see from the swamp is that the closer you look at Kid Dyne-O-Mite, the less you see of that Hopey Changey thing, and the more you see a typical, corrupt Chicago Machine Politician- and empty suit with a big smile.

And who was the first person to compare Barack Obama to Paris Hilton? It was Barack Obama! "I mean, I'm so overexposed, I'm making Paris Hilton look like a recluse." (Via Newsbusters). Meanwhile, what do you make of this statement?

That ad was blatantly racist. Putting a black guy up alongside white women sends a strong racist message.

So in order to avoid being racist, we need to carefully separate the black guys from the white women . . . . Apparently, that's what we've come to with the first "post-racial" candidate.

Miss "Fairness Doctrine" Turned Out the Lights! Republicans Stand Strong (Live Thread III)

Political Power Flowing from the Pump

In one of the more ironic acts of political theatre we have witnessed, Speaker Nancy Pelosi last Friday ordered the lights be shut off when Republicans refused to leave the floor of the House of Representatives, determined to continue the debate over offshore drilling.  Granted, Madam Speaker is often in the dark herself, but the great irony here is that she used her control over energy to stifle a debate about increasing energy supply.

The Sound Of Settled Science

The logbooks kept by every naval ship, ranging from Nelson’s Victory and Cook’s Endeavour down to the humblest frigate, are emerging as one of the world’s best sources for long-term weather data. The discovery has been made by a group of British academics and Met Office scientists who are seeking new ways to plot historic changes in climate.

“This is a treasure trove,” said Dr Sam Willis, a maritime historian and author who is affiliated with Exeter University’s Centre for Maritime Historical Studies.

“Ships’ officers recorded air pressure, wind strength, air and sea temperature and other weather conditions. From those records scientists can build a detailed picture of past weather and climate.”

A preliminary study of 6,000 logbooks has produced results that raise questions about climate change theories. One paper, published by Dr Dennis Wheeler, a Sunderland University geographer, in the journal The Holocene, details a surge in the frequency of summer storms over Britain in the 1680s and 1690s.

Many scientists believe storms are a consequence of global warming, but these were the coldest decades of the so-called Little Ice Age that hit Europe from about 1600 to 1850.

Wheeler and his colleagues have since won European Union funding to extend this research to 1750. This shows that during the 1730s, Europe underwent a period of rapid warming similar to that recorded recently — and which must have had natural origins.

The only thing I find surprising is that the academics seemed surprised. Sailors know that the British navy and merchant marine kept splendid records which were then compiled to provide essential information on routing to sailing ships. Wind directions and speed (including probabilities), currents, etc., all there:

Admiralty Routeing Charts

Routeing Chart These charts are essential for use in Passage Planning and ocean voyages. They include routes and distances between major ports, ocean currents, ice limits, load lines and wind roses, with expected meteorological and oceanographic conditions for each month of the year. Five Routeing Charts cover the oceans of the world; North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Sailors still use them today.
