Cool headed, indeed, assuming he actually registered that it was a child. I once literally ran off the road when a child in a station wagon stuck his upper body out of a rear window and pointed (what was presumably) a toy rifle at me. Granted I didn't have much combat training (was a tech in the Air Force at the time) but I assure you I didn't process any information about size and scale. I saw a gun pointed at me and responded instantly, and only to that.
