They probably did see swastikas on Japanese airplanes being that the swastika is a religous symbol and a symbol of luck.

Januray 13, 2003 - Buddhist Nazis?!

If you ever look at a Japanese map, you'll probably see little swastikas all over the place! That was the symbol of the Nazis, and something that nobody in their right mind uses in North America or Europe. But on closer inspection, you'll notice that the swastikas on Japanese maps are actually backwards. They've got nothing at all to do with Nazis... they actually mark the locations of Buddhist temples. It's all very innocent, but when you see that for the first time and don't realize what it is, it's pretty shocking.

Sorry, there were none on Japanese Zero's, Val's, or Kate's.

The problem is those map markings are not swastikas. Don't believe me? Go to your dictionary and look up "Swastika" and the accompanying picture.
