Good point. After I made that statement, I remembered how there were tons of people who thought LHO was a few bricks shy of a load. It would be hard to be that consistent over such a protracted period of time.

I was interested in this subject many years ago and read everything I could get my hands on, including much of the Warren Report. Even though I think the official "lone gunman theory" is a huge stretch to believe, I never did find a conspiracy theory that didn't have its own flaws of logic. What's your opinion on it, Poohbah?

Somebody ping me if this thing is ever solved. :-)

Much of the criticism of the lone gunman theory rests on the "magic bullet" supposedly being in pristine condition.

That is the product of the conspiracy theorists showing you only a side view of the bullet. A base view, especially when done side-by-side with a truly pristine Mannlicher-Carcano bullet, shows just how much damage was done to it--one side (the side opposite the good side that's always shown by the conspiracy types) is completely flattened, and the curvature on the good side is somewhat distorted (which isn't evident in a side-on shot with no perspective).

Additionally, the theorists misplace Connally in the car--they assume that he was sitting at the same level and directly in front of Kennedy. Actually, he was slightly lower and a bit to the left. When put Connally in his true position, the bullet path through both bodies lines up much better.

Also, the "Jack Ruby" aspect of the conspiracy theory falls apart when you look at the timing of his arrival at the jail--if Oswald hadn't asked for a sweater, Ruby would have gotten to the jail five minutes AFTER Oswald was transferred.

One additional point: Ruby was kind to animals, especially to his dog (this was attested by all of his friends). He left his dog in his car before going to the Western Union office, and taking a side trip to the jail. If he'd willfully intended to shoot Oswald at the time, he wouldn't have left that dog in the car.

It won't ever be "solved," to everyone's satisfaction. When the rest of the classified information is released (in another 10 years, I think I recall), it will only fuel more conntroversy, I'm sure.

Government agencies and commissions are notoriously inept, and it would be surprising if the Warren Commission got everything right. But they still might have gotten most of it right.

It's even less credible that they engaged in a massive coverup that has basically withstood intense criticism for 40 years.

Too many people would know the truth about a subject too important to keep quiet. Nobody credible has spoken out. The most that has happened is that many people have raised legitimate questions, and ridiculous ones, also.

It was solved in 1963. Oswald did it. See Poobah's post below for a start. There is ZERO evidence that anyone else was involved, just doubts (Oswald wasn't a good enough shot) bogus science (single bullet won't work), rumor (somebody said this or that but they were killed and couldn't testify), or accusations of evidence tampering (body was altered).
