'B.C.' cartoon seen as slur of Islam

Muslims allege veteran artist Hart made cryptic attack

The Council on American-Islamic Relations once again is demanding an apology for an alleged slur of Muslims, this time asserting a veteran cartoonist has cryptically defamed Islam.

The Washington, D.C.-based group sent out a dispatch to its e-mail list after a "B.C." cartoon last week by Johnny Hart was publicly questioned on a Washington Post Web chat page.

The cartoon shows a caveman entering an outhouse at night, and then saying, from inside, "Is it just me, or does it stink in here?"

The Post reader said the cartoon only made sense metaphorically, noting the strip contained a total of six crescent moons, and wondered if it might be a cryptic slur on Muslims.

Ibrahim Hooper, CAIR's spokesman, is sure it's a defamation of Islam.

"I think the reason there might not have been initial complaints is that it's so cryptic," he told the Post. "If you know who the cartoonist is, what he's done in the past, then it becomes clear. Otherwise, it's just an unfunny joke."

CAIR also is demanding an apology from radio counselor Dr. Laura Schlessinger for an alleged "anti-Muslim tirade" on her program this week.

Hart, 73, is known to be a devout Christian who often has communicated religious themes in his strip.

Along with the moons, CAIR's e-mail noted that Hart drew a sound effect – "SLAM" – between two frames to accompany the closing of the outhouse door. The SLAM, which was rendered vertically in the shaped of an I, could be viewed as "Islam," CAIR said.

The group also noted the cartoon appeared on the 15th day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Hart and Creators Syndicate insist, however, the cartoon is just a simple joke that is being misunderstood.

"My goodness. That's incredible," Hart told the Post after hearing of CAIR's claims. "That's unbelievable!"

The cartoonist explained it as a silly bathroom joke. The SLAM simply depicted the caveman walking into the outhouse and the moons indicated it was nighttime. Also outhouses often are shown with crescent moons.

"This comic was in no way intended to be a message against Islam – subliminal or otherwise," he told the Post. "It would be contradictory to my own faith as a Christian to insult other people's beliefs. If you should have any further silly notions about malicious intent from this quarter, you can save yourself a phone call."

Several years ago, Hart drew protest from Jewish groups for an Easter Sunday strip that showed the candles of a Jewish menorah flickering out one by one alongside one of Jesus' last utterances. It culminated with the menorah turning into a cross and the words "It is finished." Hart insisted the cartoon was meant to honor both Judaism and Christianity.

The Post interviewed a number of analysts who believed Hart's outhouse strip was an intentional defamation of Islam.

Marshall Blonsky, professor of semiotics at the New School in New York, said for one thing, people don't slam outhouse doors.

An expert in the interpretation of signs and symbols, Blonsky said he didn't get the joke, and the cartoon makes sense only in light of the religious interpretation.

The paper also interviewed six leading cartoonists, who all admire Hart. Five of them thought the religious interpretation probably was right, including Berkeley Breathed, creator of "Bloom County" and "Opus," and Jef Mallett, creator of the nationally syndicated cartoon "Frazz."

Only Doonesbury's Garry Trudeau sided with Hart.

"We cartoonists are simple folk. We don't write on that cryptic a level," he told the Post. "Leave Johnny alone."

Blonsky opined that when it comes to artistic criticism, it is a mistake to give much weight at all to the artist's stated intention.

All that matters, he said, is the way people interpret it. Therefore, even if Hart intended no offense, the offense is there.

As WorldNetDaily reported, CAIR and another Muslim group demanded an apology last year from Pulitzer-prize winning political cartoonist Doug Marlette for his depiction of a Middle Eastern-looking man behind the steering wheel of a nuclear-bomb laden truck under the headline, "What would Muhammad drive?"

The cartoon shows a Ryder rental truck like the one used by convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

Marlette told WorldNetDaily he would not apologize, though he had received thousands of e-mails from angry Muslims, with some threats of death and mutilation.

Thousands of men have died, fighting for the freedom and liberty for this country. They died ,so we could now have freedom. They died, so their children, and grandchildren could be free and live in peace.

I feel certain, not a single man that died fighting was a muslim. They didn't die for Islam. To all muslims living in our country, I suggest you leave and return to the country you left.

You are not welcome here.

How can a B.C. character defame an A.D. "religion"?

I never associated the crescent on an outhouse with Islam.

Thanks Ibrahim for the 'heads up'. Next time I see an outhouse I'll think of you.

It's true that PEOPLE don't slam outhouse doors. They don't need to. The long springs attached to them do the slamming for them....

Actually this is probably one of Johnny Hart's most creative and interesting cartoons.

I think CAIR should just go rot in hell or return to Arabia - not much difference in either place.

I get sick and tired of these evil and wicked bastards who leave their own God forsaken Hell hole - that terrorizes any religion other than their own - come to a nation that is predominately Protestant Christian, and then get upset when we get tired of their demonic religion that advocate killing my neighbors and mutiliating and torturing innocent people.

It's a cartoon. It is not a bomb. It is a drawing. It is not a plane piloted into the side of a populated mosque. It is a First Amendment free expression. Someone needs to tell CAIR that if they want to chop the head off someone who does not express Islam in glowing (and lying) terms, then they should get the hell out of a country that is obviously too good for their evil, wicked souls.

This is true multiculturalism. The most violent and cut-throat culture wins.

Marshall Blonsky, professor of semiotics at the New School in New York, said for one thing, people don't slam outhouse doors.

This guy has been teaching at "The New School for Social Research" (its real name) at 12th St and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan for heaven knows how long, and he thinks he knows anything about outhouses?

As a good old Georgia girl with personal experience digging outhouse vaults as well as using them, I can tell Mr. Effete Manhattanite Blonsky that every outhouse I've ever been in has a good strong spring on the door. It keeps the critters out and the smell in. And it goes "SLAM!"

He's just looking for an opportunity to bad-mouth a Christian guy from flyover country and curry favor with his putative masters the MooseLimbs.

These a-holes should be cleaning up their 'religion' instead of playing cheap-and-obvious politics. Islam has been around long enough, and terrorists have been hiding under it long enough, that the majority should have GOTTEN RID OF THEM BY NOW.

Blonsky obviously hasn't done much camping, especially in primitive campsites. The slamming of outhouse doors is the "morning rooster" of campers.

Well then should I be offended at the gun monument outside of the UN? How about my tax dollars confiscated by the government to pay for Maplethorpe's bullwhip-up-the-ass photo, or the crucifix in a jar of urine "art" or a black Madonna picture with little images of female genitalia floating around her and the whole thing splattered with bovine dung. Why aren't those things of matter of your concern, Marshall Blonksy, when orders of magnitude more of people are offended by that dreck?

terrorists have been hiding under it long enough, that the majority should have GOTTEN RID OF THEM BY NOW.

If I recall, the majority were out in the streets dancing and singing the praises of the terrorists while our streets were filled with smoke, blood and rubble.

I would say nuke them all, but that would be too kind and disproportionately merciful, rather give them Saddam's biological weapons that the Muslims seem to treasure.

Big time stupidity. Have these idiots ever SEEN an outhouse? The fact that they do no know about the fact that most old style outhouses had a cresent moon makes THEM look like they have no knowledge of toilet facilities.

Ignorance or these opportunists are just fishing for the issue. PR whores.

Sounds like CAIR has been taking lessons from the NAACP and the other 'politics of victimization' bullies.

I saw this story on the HLN ticker and thought that it must be a doozy. However, once I saw the strip, I am completely convinced that these Islamic crybabies need to lighten up.

Maybe they should be asking themselves, What has the 'religion of peace' done in the name of peace recently? It seems to me that all they can do is blow stuff up and kill a lot of people who aren't hurting anybody.

I haven't heard CAIR or that incredibly obnoxious spokesman on tv d*mning the Moslem blood libel against the Jews. The usual nastiness coming out of the ME about Jews using children's blood is back again.

Until CAIR starts LOUDLY VERY LOUDLY distancing themselves from what is the Moslem reality, and believe me, I am sick and tired of the Moslems thinking they can have it both ways, CAIR can take it where the sun goes down.
