If abortion is murder – why punish it so mildly?

God will judge all.

Soon enough...

all this abstract rights blah blah blah - it's not a matter of rights but obligation - parents have extraordinary obligations to their children - you can let someone starve on your doorstep, but you can't starve your child.

Judith Jarvis Thomson argued convincingly ("A Defence of Abortion") that pregnancies that are the result of forced sex (rape being a special case) or which are life threatening should or could, morally, be terminated. Using the transactional language: the contract was not entered to willingly or reasonably and, therefore, is null and void. Any actions which are intended to terminate it and to annul its consequences should be legally and morally permissible.

The interesting part of this is that the ``contract'' was violated by one party, but a third party is the one who is ``punished.''

Imagine if two parties, A and B enter a contract. But the lawyer who prepares the contract makes a mistake that voids the contract. Because the contract is not valid B does not recieve the benefit of the contract, though it was the error of the lawyer, not party B.

Well, this piece certainly makes it obvious that, contrary to what many pro-life and pro-choice ideologues might have us believe, the abortion issue is not a simple black and white issue at all. I don't agree with many of the author's assumptions, but he does seem to know how to get people thinking on this subject.
